X-Women beat Tigers in AUS regular season home opener
The STFX X-Women defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 62-55 to kick off Atlantic University Sport regular season play
Antigonish, NS – The STFX X-Women defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 62-55 Wednesday night on Coach K Court to kick off Atlantic University Sport women's basketball regular season play.
STFX Gabriel Pizza player of the game Ekaterina Karchevskaya scored 13 points and pulled won eight rebounds in the win.
Krissy Cooper netted 13m including a trio of three-pointers, and Shannon Neita had a big double-double night for the X-Women scoring 11 and hauling in a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Tigers got out to an early 4-0 lead, then both team struggled to score. Dalhousie held the X-Women scoreless in the opening four and a half minutes of the game.
STFX continued to struggle to get baskets to fall and the first quarter ended in a low scoring affair, 11-7 in favour of the Tigers.
Dalhousie continued to hold into the advantage for the majority of the second quarter. A three-pointer by Eve Widmeyer with under three minutes to play gave the Tigers a 22-16 lead.
The X-Women clawed back and were trailing by a point, 25-24 at halftime.
Karchevskaya scored eight points for X in the opening half, while Tigers player of the game Kaitlyn Ferrier had seven points for the visitors.
The X-Women went on a 13-0 run in the third quarter, including a pair of consecutive threes by Jaya D'Souza to kick start the stanza.
The Blue and White defense stepped up their game, holding the Tigers scoreless through five minutes as they built up a 38-25 lead.
STFX outpaced the Tigers 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 44-36 lead after 30 minutes.
Dalhousie chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the deficit. The X-Women held on for the 62-55 win.
Ferrier finished with a game-high 17 points for Dalhousie.
The same two teams will be back in action on Friday night, November 1st in Halifax as they play home-at-home games to start the season. Tip-off is 6:00 pm at the Dalplex.
