X-Women fall to Axewomen in lopsided game

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The visiting StFX X-Women fell by a lopsided 91-50 margin to the Acadia Axewomen Wednesday night in the last home game of 2021-22 season on Stu Aberdeen court.

The Axewomen improve to 10-4 with the win and sit second in the AUS standings, while the X-Women fall to 2-13 in seventh place.

Senior guard Jayda Veinot posted a blistering 16 points in the first quarter of play as the Axewomen pushed out to a 25-10 lead after one frame.

Acadia continued the barrage of points in the second quarter with Veinot adding 10 more points and ending the first half with 26 points as Acadia were up 52-22 at halftime.

The X-Women continued to struggle in the second half resulting in 17.4% from the field while being out-rebounded 58-33 after regulation time.

The Axewomen posted their largest lead of 42 points at the 8:33 mark of the last quarter.

Tyra Atherley was the bright spot for the X-Women with 14 points, while teammate Courtney Taylor led StFX with 7 rebounds in 12 minutes of play.

For the fourth time during this shortened season, Veinot posted 30 points or more and currently leads the AUS with 23.1 points per game average.

Other notable Acadia performances included 14 points off the bench from Sarah Delorey. Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Both teams posted a high number of turnovers – 15 for X-Women and 18 for the Axewomen.

StFX and Acadia conclude the AUS regular season in a rematch in Antigonish on Saturday – game time 6:00 pm.
