Capers defeat X-Women in final game of AUS season

Antigonish, NS – The Cape Breton Capers defeated the StFX X-Women 79-70 in the final game of the AUS season for both squads Friday night at the Saputo Centre.

The Capers were lead by a pair of Cape Breton natives in guard MacKenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, NS) and forward Hailey Macleod (Marion Bridge, NS) who each scored 21 points on the night.

MacLeod earned Subway player of the game honours, she also pulled down six rebounds in the game.

The first quarter was a close affair with Cape Breton outscoring the X-Women 22-20.

First year X-Women forward Marley Bonnick (Brampton, ON) had a huge second quarter for the X-Women who outpaced the Capers 25-15. She tallied 18 points, including four buckets from beyond the arc.

The X-Women held a 45-37 advantage at halftime.

The Capers quickly got back into the game as they went on a seven-point run to start the third quarter to go up 45-44 a minute and a half in.

CBU lead 54-47 midway through the quarter and established a 60-55 lead after 30 minutes as their defense held the X-Women to only 10 points.

The visitors maintained their advantage throughout the fourth quarter and held off a late X-Women charge but it was too little to late for the X-Women as Cape Breton closed out the 79-70 victory.

Monique Calliste (Toronto, ON) also finished the game in double scoring digits for CBU as she netted 17 and also lead the team in rebounding with eight, along with Audrey Rankin (Prince George's County, MD).

For the X-Women Bonnick finished with 32 points and made it a double-double night with 10 rebounds.

Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Karina Sarai (Surrey, BC) contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

The game marked the final one for fifth year X-Women forward Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS).

StFX wraps up the regular season with a 3-17 record in seventh place and out of playoff contention.

The fourth place Capers (9-11) will be competing at the Subway AUS Championship next weekend, February 28 – March 1 in Halifax.
