X-Women fall to Huskies

Antigonish, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies established an early first quarter lead and didn't look back as they defeated the StFX X-Women 70-57 Wednesday evening in AUS action at the StFX Saputo Centre.

The Huskies went on a 10-0 run in the opening 10 minutes of the game as turnovers proved costly for the X-Women.

StFX continued to struggle on offense as SMU built up a 17-4 lead later in the quarter. They were up 17-11 at the conclusion of the first.

Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) scored nine points in the opening quarter for the Huskies, all coming from beyond the arc.  

Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) responded with five points for StFX.

Saint Mary's continued to be strong with the outside jumpers in the second quarter.

Fraser scored on consecutive lay-ups midway through to pull the X-Women to within seven points, 24-17, but then MacKinnon hit another three-pointer to re-establish a 10-point lead.

The quarter closed out 32-20 in favour of Saint Mary's.

The X-Women played a stronger third quarter as they kept pace with the Huskies, being outscored by a closer 20-16 margin.

Arianna Macias (Tampa, FL) scored seven points in the quarter for the Huskies, including a trio of three-pointers, the last one coming in the final minute of play.

The Huskies led 52-36 after 30 minutes.

The visitors continued their strong long-range shooting in the fourth quarter. The X-Women hung with them but couldn't break their 10-point lead.

The game closed out 70-57 in favour of Saint Mary's.

Macias earned Subway player of the game honours as she finished with 20 points on the night for the Huskies and added six rebounds.

MacKinnon scored 18 – all from three-point range – and had 7 rebounds, while Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) netted 16.

Fraser was the high scorer for the X-Women with 14 points, and she hauled in six rebounds. Marley Bonnick (Brampton, ON) scored 10.

The same two teams will tip-off again in Saturday night in Halifax, game time is 6:00 pm.
