X-Women drop close overtime game to Capers

Sydney, NS – The StFX X-Women dropped a close 72-64 game in overtime to the Cape Breton Capers Saturday night at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.

The Capers came back after being down 19-12 after the first quarter and 33-25 at halftime.

X-Women guard Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) had a strong first half for the X-Women, netting 16 points. Monique Calliste (Toronto, ON) scored 12 points for the Capers.

The third quarter saw the Capers start to turn the game around as they outscored the X-Women 17-10. Hailey MacLeod (Marion Bridge, NS) scored six points off the Capers bench and Mackenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, NS) had eight, including a pair of three-pointers as CBU trailed StFX by a single point, 43-42, after three.

The fourth quarter featured back in forth action as both teams attempted to take the lead and hold onto it. MacLeod was key for the Capers, scoring 11 points.

Down the stretch each team had their chance to move the score on the free throw line and Marley Bonnick (Brampton, ON) had a last second outside shot that missed the mark for the X-Women as the game finished knotted at 58-58 at the end of regulation.

The Capers scored six consecutive points to start the overtime period as they led 64-58 midway through the extra five minutes of play. They held the X-Women to only six points and were able to hang on for the eventual 72-64 win.

MacDonald finished the night as the Capers high scorer with 25 points and was named Subway player of the game. Calliste scored 22 and contributed eight rebounds and Ryan had 16 points. Audrey Rankin (Prince George's County, MD) was the top rebounder with 15 on the night.

For the X-Women, Fraser led the attack with 24 points while Bonnick finished with 16. Karina Sarai (Surrey, BC) hauled in 10 rebounds for X who drop to 2-13 on the season.

The Capers improve to 6-9 and with the win clinched an AUS playoff berth. They will next see action on Saturday, February 8th when they travel to Halifax for a game against Saint Mary's.

The X-Women will be in Halifax Wednesday night to take on Dalhousie.
