Antigonish, NS – The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the StFX X-Women 71-62 Saturday night in AUS action at the StFX Saputo Centre.

It was the X-Women who got out to an early lead in the game, holding the advantage for the majority of the opening quarter. The Sea-Hawks pulled even at 13-13 with just under two minutes to play and then went up 19-15 at the conclusion of the quarter.

They did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. The X-Women pulled to within two points early in the second quarter but the Sea-Hawks opened up a 35-22 lead at halftime, outscoring the blue and white 16-7 in the second quarter.

The third quarter was a lot closer at 23-22 in favour of Memorial. Briar MacDonald (Antigonish, NS) had a big quarter for the X-Women, scoring 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

The Sea-Hawks were up 58-44 after three. StFX won the fourth quarter 19-13 but their comeback fell short as the Sea-Hawks had built up too much of a lead and held on for the win.

Memorial guard Haille Nickerson (Grimsby, ON) scored a game-high 23 points in pacing the Sea-Hawks attack. She also had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in the game.

Alana Short (Barrie, ON) scored 14 points and took home Subway player of the game honours. She added five rebounds and a pair of steals for the Sea-Hawks.

MacDonald was the top scorer for the X-Women with 19 points and seven rebounds. Aliyah Fraser scored 16 points and had eight rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals and blocks in an all-around effort for the home team.

The same two teams will be back in action on Coach K Court at the StFX Saputo Centre again Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is 1:00 pm.
