Capers defeat X-Women in final game of CBU tournament

Sydney, NS – The Cape Breton Capers defeated the StFX X-Women 80-63 to win the Protcase Debbie Ruiz Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. The X-Women wrapped up the weekend with a 1-2 record.

The Capers were led in scoring by Mackenzee Ryan with 27 points. Senior Hannah Brown had 21 points and 7 rebounds and rookie Maia Waitling had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

The X-Women were led by Jamie McCarron with 16 points (including a trio of three-pointers) and 4 assists. Kim Kingsbury scored 15 points and freshman guard Nalini Maharaj had a strong game off the bench scoring 15 and pulling in 7 rebounds. Leah Fahey also had 7 boards in the game for X.

Hannah Brown scored 17 of her points in the opening quarter as the Capers took an early 23-10 lead. They were able to keep the lead throughout the duration of the game as they were up 48-32 at halftime and 62-48 after three quarters.

Scoring in the second half was much closer as the Capers held a slim 32-31 advantage over the visiting X-Women.

For her efforts Caper Breton's Mackenzee Ryan was awarded Protocase Player of the Game honours. Toni Bianchini was awarded a Protocase Tournament MVP award for CBU.

Jamie McCarron was awarded a Protocase Tournament MVP award for StFX who finished third overall in the exhibition event.

The tournament marked the final pre-season games for both the Capers and the X-Women. Cape Breton will open AUS regular season action on the road November 3rd and 4th in Halifax to play the Dalhousie Tigers.

The StFX X-Women will also play on November 2nd and 3rd as they host the UNB both nights at 6:00 pm at StFX Oland Centre.
