Sea-Hawks win second straight game over X-Women

Antigonish, NS – The visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks won their second consecutive game in as many days overt the X-Women, this time it was a 72-54 victory on Sunday afternoon at the StFX Oland Centre.

Hayley Nickerson (Grimsby, ON) contributed 14 points off the Sea-Hawks bench for the win, and Subway player of the game Cameron Longley (Hubbards, NS) scored 13, also off the bench. Longley also had eight rebounds in the game and Nickerson hauled in five.

The Sea-Hawks got out to a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. After playing a close opening five minutes to the game the visitors went on a 10-0 run and closed out the quarter on the strong note.

The X-Women outscored the Sea-Hawks 18-15 in the second quarter to draw within seven points at halftime as Memorial held a 36-29 edge heading into the locker room.

Nickerson scored 11 points in the first half for Memorial while Lindsay Taylor (Waterloo, ON) had 10.

The Sea-Hawks played a strong third quarter, out-pacing the X-Women 20-10. Rosie Stanoev (St. John's, NL) hit a key pair of three-pointers midway through the quarter that bolstered the MUN lead. They closed out with a 56-39 advantage after 30 minutes of play.

In a low scoring fourth quarter, the X-Women kept the Sea-Hawks closer but were unable to overcome the deficit as they dropped to a disappointing 1-17 on the season.

The X-Women did play a well-balanced game on Sunday as 10 of their 12 players saw the scoresheet with the bench producing 30 points. Holly Scott (Antigonish, NS) and Jessica Miller (Mount Denson, NS) each scored nine points.

Maggie Segeren (Komoka, ON) earned StFX player of the game honours for her eight-point effort from the bench. Kim Kingsbury (Nepean, ON) contributed seven points and Caroline Hrabinski (Toronto, ON) was the top rebounder with nine on the afternoon.

For the Sea-Hawks, Taylor finished with 10 points and six rebounds, Stanoev had eight and Jane Baird (St. John's, NF) netted eight and had six boards.

With one weekend left in AUS regular season play, the X-Women will close out on the round with a pair of games at UPEI and UNB on February 23rd and 24th.  

The Sea-Hawks (10-8, 26 points), who currently sit in a tie for fourth position with UPEI (9-9) will host the third place SMU Huskies (10-8, 28 points) in a pair of key games both worth four points in the AUS standings. Game times are 6:00 pm on Friday, February 23rd and 12:00 pm on the 24th.
