Sea-Hawks come from behind to defeat X-Women

Antigonish, NS – The Memorial Sea-Hawks mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter to defeat the StFX X-Women 73-65 Saturday night at the StFX Oland Centre.

Down for the majority of the game, the visitors outscored the StFX squad 26-12 in the final quarter to take the win.

Subway player of the game Brooklynn Wright (Cambridge, ON) scored a game-high 19 points and Lindsay Taylor (Waterloo, ON) netted 18 to lead the Sea-Hawks in the victory. Wright also hauled in eight rebounds and had a pair of blocks.

The Sea-Hawks didn't have the lead in the game until midway through the fourth quarter. StFX opened up with a 20-11 first quarter margin.

Memorial played a closer second quarter and edged the X-Women 14-13 in scoring as they pulled to within a point. A three-pointer and subsequent jumper by Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS) gave the X-Women a 29-21 lead late in the quarter.

They closed out the first half with a 33-25 lead over the visiting Sea-Hawks.

Taylor scored seven of her points in the first half while Haille Nickerson (Grimsby, ON) added six. McCarron with seven and Holly Scott (Antigonish, NS) with eight lead the StFX scoring in the opening half.

The third quarter was close as the Sea-Hawks began to creep back in the game as the X-Women defense tried to hold them off. Memorial pulled to within two points at 41-39 with just over three minutes to play but consecutive jump shots by the X-Women put them ahead 47-39.

Despite being outscored 22-20 in the third frame, the X-Women held a 53-47 lead after 30 minutes of play. Nickerson sank a key three-pointer with 35 seconds left in the quarter to pull the Sea-Hawks closer.

The opening three minutes of the fourth quarter featured close back and forth action then the X-Women offense went cold as the Sea-Hawks mounted their comeback. The teams were tied 55-55 midway through the fourth.

Wright hit a three-pointer with 4:23 left to play to give Memorial a 61-57 lead and they never looked back. The X-Women got within four points in the final minutes of play but were not able to overcome the deficit.

Nickerson added to the Sea-Hawks scoring with 16 points off the bench and had nine rebounds, while teammate Jane Baird (St. John's, NF) lead the team with 10 boards.

StFX player of the game Kim Kingsbury (Nepean, ON) was the high scorer for her team, netting 16 and adding six rebounds. Samantha Minicucci (Mississauga, ON) scored 12 and Scott added 10. Katie MacIntosh (Barrie, ON) was the top rebounder for X with 10 on the night.

The same two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre.
