ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX women's basketball head coach Augy Jones is pleased to announce the commitment of point guard Lucia MacKay from New Glasgow, N.S. to the X-Women basketball program for the 2018-19 season.

"Lu has played the game as a point guard since she was 12-13 years old," comments Coach Jones. "This is a huge plus for her entering the next phase of her basketball career as she already has the basketball IQ required to play 'quarterback' at the U SPORTS level."

"Lu sees the court wonderfully and can get the ball safely to her teammates on the floor. As it pertains to team chemistry, Lucia is a perfect match for our program. She always has a smile on her face, loves connecting with teammates and is extremely coachable. I am personally pleased to welcome a player that I have watched grow up as I am a close friend to the MacKay family."

The 5'6" point guard attends North Nova Education Centre where she has played both basketball and soccer for four years. A member of the 2017 Canada Games team, she has represented Nova Scotia on U14, U15 and U17 provincial teams. This season she was a first team all-star at the Harrison Trimble, CP Allen and Dr JH Gillis tournaments.

The niece of former Conservative MP Peter MacKay, Lucia has family connections to StFX University as he father Andy is assistant coach with the X-Women basketball program and her mother Sol is a Spanish professor at StFX. Enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts and Science in Health program for the fall, she is happy to be joining the X-Women, commenting "I have always wanted to play basketball at the U SPORTS level and I am so excited for the opportunity to play close to home for StFX."
