Antigonish, NS – The UNB Varsity Reds (7-9) defeated the StFX X-Women (1-14) Saturday evening by a 68-46 margin on Coach K Court at the StFX Oland Centre. The win was worth four points in the AUS standings for the Varsity Reds.
The Varsity Reds were powered by a 21-point effort from Subway player of the game Nicole Esson (Fredericton, NB).
The visitors got out to an early 9-0 run to start the game and built up a 20-15 lead in the opening quarter. Esson, off the bench, scored eight points to lead the Varsity Reds.
The second quarter saw the Varsity Reds outscore the X-Women 16-9 with Esson scoring nine of those points, extending their lead to 36-24 at halftime.
The X-Women came back in the third quarter and play was a lot closer at 17-13 in favour of UNB as the teams went back and forth exchanging baskets. StFX player of the game Caroline Hrabinski (Toronto, ON) scored five of her 12 points on the night in the third frame. Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) netted eight for the V-Reds including four from the free throw line.
UNB was up 53-37 after 30 minutes. They held the X-Women to only nine points in the fourth quarter en route to the win.
Along with her game-high 21 points, Esson pulled in six rebounds for the Varsity Reds. Simpson finished with 13 on the night and lead UNB with eight rebounds. Eva Tumwine (Fredericton, NB) netted 10 points.
For the X-Women Hrabinski was the top scorer with 12 points on the night, along with three rebounds and a pair of assists and steals. Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS) scored eight while Jessica Miller (Mount Denson, NS) added seven points off the bench for StFX. Katie MacIntosh (Barrie, ON) was the top rebounder with eight.
Next on the AUS schedule sees the X-Women hosting the Saint Mary's Huskies (9-5) Tuesday evening, February 6th at the StFX Oland Centre in a 6:00 pm tip-off. UNB Will be back at home on Friday, February 16th to host UPEI (8-7), also at 6:00 pm.
