X-Women fall 85-53 to Panthers

Antigonish, NS – The visiting UPEI Panthers (3-5) kicked off 2018 with an 85-53 victory over the StFX X-Women (0-8) Saturday night at the StFX Oland Centre. The game was worth four points in the AUS standings.

UPEI came out with a strong first quarter effort, outscoring the X-Women 25-10. Subway player of the game Carolina Del Santo (Barcelona, Spain) scored 12 of her eventual 20 points in the opening quarter as the Panthers never relinquished their lead throughout the game.

The second quarter was a closer affair at 15-10 for UPEI as they held a 20-point lead at halftime, 40-20.

The X-Women struggled from field goal range, shooting at 27.9% in the game to the Panthers 41.9%. UPEI outscored the home team 45-33 in the second half en route to the win.

Del Santo led all scorers in the game with 20 points and she also pulled in nine rebounds. Kiera Rigby (Charlottetown, PE) scored 16 for the Panthers, Jane McLaughlin (Fortune, PE) had 13 with six rebounds and Reese Baxendale (Sussex, NB) added 10.

X-Women player of the game Kendra Smith (North Preston, NS) scored nine off the bench for StFX and had eight rebounds. Holly Scott (Antigonish, NS) netted eight points and Samantha Minicucci (Mississauga, ON) scored seven.

The X-Women will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host the first place Acadia Axewomen in a 6:00 pm game the Oland Centre.

The Panthers next see action on Friday night when Saint Mary's visits Charlottetown for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
