(FREDERICTON, NB) On Think Pink Weekend, UNB Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy sported pink hair.
"There's some grey in there that wasn't there two hours ago," said Speedy, after his team's 72-58 win over the StFX X-Women.
Despite the victory, Speedy admitted there were some gaps. "Too many turnovers, too many missed box-outs, and 0-for-8 from the three-point line, so just some things that we need to do a little bit better to win the close games."
Hannah Currie led the Varsity Reds with a season-high 19 points. She added five rebounds and a couple of assists.
Currie was 8-for-13 shooting, almost all of that coming inside.
"It's definitely one of the strengths of our team, and our guards did an excellent job, seeing us inside today and we dominated there," said Currie.
Currie started in place of the injured Kiley DeLong, and admits her big night did come as a bit of a surprise. "I knew I was having a good game because of the assists that were happening, that kind of thing, but it doesn't really register until after."
"Nobody has to be Kiley, but they have to be better than they normally are, and Hannah was very good today," said Speedy.
Rachel Cleary scored 17 points for UNB, while Grace Wade dropped 11.
Lindsay Lessard scored a game-high 21, to lead the X-Women.
StFX head coach Augy Jones thought his team could've played better, but wasn't disappointed.
"We held their guards," said Jones. "Laura Kaye went 0-for-6, Nicole LaFleur went 1-for-3, Grace Wade, 3-for-9, so we did well on the guards, but the three bigs is where we had problems."
"Our interior defence was not what we wanted it to be, and that was the big difference."
With the win, UNB improves to 10-and-7. The Varsity Reds are now just four points back of third place Cape Breton, in the AUS standings.
StFX falls to 3-and-13.
"Any win in February, you take," said Speedy.
The Varsity Reds go on the road, next Friday, to face second place Acadia.
The X-Women will host Saint Mary's on Friday night at 6:00 pm.
