X-Women win MSVU invitational tournament

Halifax, NS – The X-Women basketball team won the 7th annual Dyrick McDermott Invitational tournament on Sunday afternoon with a 66-50 victory over the host Mount Saint Vincent Mystics.

Led by tournament most valuable player Lindsay Lessard, the X-Women got out to a 14-7 first quarter lead and increased that to 31-16 at halftime. They continued their strong play throughout the second half en route to the win and a perfect 4-0 tournament record over the weekend.

Lessard scored a game-high 18 points and also had seven rebounds and a pair of steals.

Kolbi Roper notched 16 points and had two rebounds, while tournament all-star Shannon Hatch scored 12 and had six rebounds and four assists on the afternoon. Carolyn Smith earned player of the game honors for the X-Women.

Kate Gallant was the higher scorer for the Mystics with 12 points and six rebounds. Danielle Young scored 10 and had five boards while Maria Carroll added nine. Both Gallant and Young were named to the tournament all-star team.

The X-Women played to weekend victories over Mount Allison (75-33), MSVU (74-55) and St. Thomas (58-55) in round robin action.

They will next hit the court when AUS regular season play resumes on Friday, January 8th when they travel to Halifax to play the Dalhousie Tigers in a four-point game. Tip-off is 6:00 pm at Dalplex. The X-Women will then host UNB on Saturday, January 9th at 6:00 pm.
