FREDERICTON, NB – The StFX X-Women's basketball team kicked off the Helen Campbell and Eric Garland Basketball Tournament with a 73-44 win over the University of Lethbrige Pronghorns.

Lindsey Lessard (Waterloo, ON) led the way with 24 pts in the game, and went 6-6 from the free throw line.

StFX got off to a strong start taking the lead early and not looking back, The X-Women netted 25 points in the first quarter, leading the Pronghorns by 13 points after only the first.

The X-Women attacked the basket down low, forcing Lethbridge to foul. StFX moved the ball with pace around the perimeter, finding the open player down low, but leaving the floor open for a quick shot from outside.

The X-Women continued their push to end the first half well up on their opponents. Their 51 per cent shooting from the field help them end the half leading 21-45. The X-Women also made a mark on the charity stripe scoring 15 points on free throws.

StFX continued their push through most of the second half leading by as much as 32 points, and would take the tournament opener 73-44.

We really had some things we wanted to work on and Lethbridge is a good team, so we definitely didn't take them for granted," said X-Women head coach Augy Jones.

"Our pressure defense, which is new this year, caused them some problems and that would explain the spread so that went well for us."

Katie Keith (Lethbridge, AB) received the player of the game for the Pronghorns, and Lindsay Lessard was the recipient for StFX.
