X-Women basketball add to strong Maritime recruiting class for 2015-16

ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX women's basketball head coach Augy Jones is pleased to announce the final pieces of a strong Maritime recruiting class of incoming grade 12 student-athletes from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Coach Jones has added two of the top players in Nova Scotia in Jamie McCarron and Chelsea Provo, both with strong existing ties to StFX University.

"Both Jamie and Chelsea bring passion and determination to our basketball program," comments Jones. "Jamie is a physically relentless player who is self-motivated and hard-working. She is willing to do whatever it takes to make herself a better basketball player."

"Chelsea is a naturally talented player who has a real desire to win games," continues Jones. "She shows up huge in big games and has the defensive and offensive ability to contribute when her team needs her the most. Both players will be competing for a position on a depth chart that includes a mix of graduating veterans and incoming freshmen."

New Glasgow, N.S. native Jamie McCarron has been a young camper at StFX basketball camp over the years, a strong supporter at X-Women games, and a member of Scotia Sting SeleX, a summer club team connected to the X-Women program. A 5'11" power forward out of North Nova Education Centre, McCarron was the top defender in grade 10 and most valuable player in her grade 11 season. She has played provincially for Basketball Nova Scotia and attended the prestigious 'Point Guard College' in Atlanta last summer.

McCarron comments, "It is truly a dream come true to know that all of my hard work has paid off. I am so excited to continue my basketball career at StFX, close to home where my family and friends can watch and cheer for me. Coach Jones has given me this opportunity and I plan on making the most of it."

East Preston, N.S. native Chelsea Provo is the younger sister of X-Men basketball third year point guard Davonte Provo. A 5'3" point guard from Auburn High School, she played with the Basketball Nova Scotia U14, U15 and U16 teams, while also playing club ball for the North Preston Bulls.

Provo and McCarron add to a recruiting class that includes athletes who all lead their respective teams into division one provincial championship tournaments. Point guard Courtney Bulman captained Bernice MacNaughton High School to a second consecutive provincial championship banner at Harbor Station in St John, N.B. In the Nova Scotia provincial championship at Horton High School, McCarron helped NNEC to a fourth place finish, while Kendra Smith and Provo paced Auburn into fifth place, and local Antigonish talent Holly Scott guided Dr. J.H. Gillis to a sixth place standing.
