Capers earn victory over hoop X-Women

Sydney, NS – The X-Women basketball team found themselves on the losing end of a 67-56 game to the Cape Breton Capers at Sullivan Fieldhouse Tuesday evening.

Subway player of the game Colleen Keane paced the Capers with 18 points as the home team held a 33-24 lead at halftime.

The Capers lead 14-12 after the opening quarter of play then outscored the X-Women 19-12 in the second quarter.

Their defense held strong and they also outscored StFX in the third frame 17-14 to open up a 50-38 advantage after 30 minutes.

The X-Women battled back and won the fourth quarter 18-17 but were unable to overcome the Capers lead. They had 28 turnovers in the game compared to the Capers 19.

Keane tallied 18 points and 6 rebounds for Cape Breton, while Rasheeka Gunn scored 13 and had 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

Alison Keogh added 12 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for the Capers.

Kolbi Roper lead the X-Women with 14 points while contributing 4 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Lindsay Lessard scored 13 and had 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.

Melissa Gottschall chipped in with 9 points and Samantha Robertson scored 8.

With the loss the X-Women fall to 4-7 on the season and remain in sixth place. With the four-point victory the Capers improve to 7-5, leaping into a tie for first place with Saint Mary's.

Cape Breton will next face UNB (5-6) in Fredericton on Friday, January 23rd, while StFX will play host to Acaida (0-10), also on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre.
