X-Women top Acadia in Wolfville

WOLFVILLE N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen (0-7) took on the StFX X-Women (3-5) Saturday night at War Memorial Gymnasium. Despite only a single point separating the two teams entering the fourth quarter, the X-Women came away with a 78-68 victory, shooting 57.6% from the field on the night.

The X-Women rattled off nine straight points to start the final frame to go up by ten.

The Axewomen cut the lead to three with 4:20 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Chanel Smith, but StFX guard Melissa Gottschall answered back with a three of her own to seal the win for the X-Women.

StFX went on a 10-2 run to start the game forcing a quick Acadia timeout. Out of the timeout, rookie guard Lauren Joudrey nailed a trey for the Axewomen.  Up by as many as nine, StFX held a 26-20 lead going into the second quarter.

The second frame was a low scoring affair for both sides with StFX holding the 13-11 edge.  X-Women forward Lindsay Lessard, named the Subway Player of the Game, led all scorers at half with 13 points on 6 for 7 from the floor.

Lessard finished the night with a double-double including 24 points and 10 rebounds. StFX held a 39-31 advantage heading into the intermission.

Acadia came out strong in the third quarter finishing off the frame on an 8-0 run and closing the StFX lead to 52-51.

Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, Paloma Anderson, had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals in her home debut. Smith had 17 points on the night and Joudrey chipped in ten.

Gottschall had 13 for the X-Women and Kolbi Roper added a 14 point, four rebound effort in the win.

StFX will take on Dalhousie this Tuesday in a four-point match in Halifax, while the Axewomen face the first place Saint Mary's Huskies before travelling to Cape Breton on the Saturday for a four point game.
