WOLFVILLE N.S. - In Wednesday night basketball action, the Acadia Axewomen, in their home opener at War Memorial gymnasium, took on the StFX X-Women with both teams looking to record their first win of the AUS regular season. It was the visiting X-Women who claimed the 57-50 victory.

In a low scoring first quarter that was all about defense, the Axewomen earned an 11-9 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

For much of the second quarter it was a back and forth battle with neither team able to establish a lead. However, the X-Women went on a 10-2 run, scoring 23 points in the quarter compared to Acadia's 11, and held a 32-22 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter the Axewomen battled back, led by the Acadia Subway Player of the Game Katie Ross, who had eight points in the frame and 15 points on the night to go with five rebounds. Ross converted back-to-back triples near the end of the third quarter pulling Acadia into a trailing position 40-43 going into the fourth.

Acadia fought back in the fourth quarter and held the lead with six minutes remaining in the game. Despite allowing Acadia to erase their ten point deficit, the X-Women were able to hang on in the final quarter, outscoring the home team 14-10 and holding on for the victory, their first of the season.

StFX (1-1) claimed the 57-50 victory thanks in part to a big fourth quarter from Shannon Hatch who netted 14 points on the evening. Subway Player of the Game Lindsay Lessard recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while teammate Kayla MacIntyre added ten for the X-Women.

Acadia, who fall to 0-3 on the season, turned the ball over 20 times throughout the course of the matchup.

Acadia and StFX will meet again this Saturday night in Antigonish. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre for the X-Women's home opener.
