X-Women fall to Huskies in AUS final

Charlottetown, PE – The AUS top seeded Saint Mary's Huskies defended their AUS title with a 76-63 victory over the second seeded StFX X-Women in the championship game of the 2014 Subway conference championship.

Tournament MVP Justine Colley scored 22 points in the final game for the Huskies and had 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

Fellow AUS all-star Rachelle Coward scored a game-high 23 points and added 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Angelina Carvery netted 16 points for the two-time consecutive champs, including nine points from three-point range. She also had 7 rebounds.

Leading the X-Women was third year post Kolbi Roper who scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds for a double-double game.

Tournament all-star Rebecca Sheehan scored 11 points and Courtney Kilyk netted 10. Veteran forward Lia St. Pierre scored 9 points and hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds in her final game for the X-Women.

The first quarter of play was close with the Huskies leading 24-22.

Saint Mary's had key three-point shooting from Coward and Carvery. Both sunk a trio of three-point baskets in the opening half.

The Huskies began to pull away in the second quarter and outscored the X-Women 20-13 as StFX had some costly turnovers.

Saint Mary's led 44-35 at half-time. They kept their lead throughout the second half and the X-Women were unable to cut into the lead.

The Huskies defense held the X-Women to only four points for the opening seven minutes of the third quarter which would prove to be a defensive, low scoring 10 minutes. Saint Mary's outpaced StFX 15-12 to take a 59-47 lead into the final quarter.

SMU held onto their lead throughout the fourth quarter, earning the 76-63 victory and conference title.

Colley, Coward and Sheehan were all named to the tournament all-star team, along with Courtney Thompson of Dalhousie and Danielle MacDonald of UPEI.

Saint Mary's will now represent the AUS at the CIS championship taking place March 13-16 at the University of Windsor.
