X-Women seal second place with win over UNB

Fredericton, NB – The X-Women basketball team sealed second place in the AUS conference with a 58-49 victory over the UNB Varsity Reds Saturday evening in the final regular season game of the year. The second place finish clinches StFX (11-9) a first round playoff bye in the upcoming AUS championship, slated for March 7-9 at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The X-Women will await the winner of the UPEI-Cape Breton quarter-final match for their semifinal game to be played on Saturday, March 8th at 6:00 pm.

In Saturday night's win over UNB, worth four points in the standings, Subway player of the game Kolbi Roper put up 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals for the X-Women, in a nice double-double effort. Her teammate Lia St. Pierre contributed 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Kimberley Taylor contributed 9 points in the X win and veteran forward Rebecca Sheehan scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. 

The leading scorer for the Varsity Reds was Rachel Cleary with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Katelyn Mangold led the V-Reds in rebounds with 7. Colleen Daly scored 9 points, all from three-point range.

The X-Women held leads of 13-8 after the first quarter and 27-19 at halftime. The second half was closer as the X-Women outscored the V-Reds 31-30 to hang their lead and the win.

The team will have the week off to prepare for the upcoming Subway AUS Championship taking place March 7-9 at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre at UPEI.
