Top ranked Huskies defeat X-Women

The X-Women basketball team came up short against the CIS ranked No. 1 Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax Friday night, dropping an 82-73 game as the Huskies remain undefeated on the season (9-0).

The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game. After a close 17-15 first quarter in favor of the Huskies, they pulled away from the X-Women in the second frame and outscored the visitors 24-15 for a 41-30 halftime advantage.

The X-Women came out and played a strong second half, keeping pace with the top ranked team and outscoring them 45-41, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.

The Huskies were led by a 22 point effort from Rachelle Coward who also had four rebounds. Angelina Carvery scored 16 points while Katrina Murrell scord 11 and added eight rebounds.

The X-Women were able to contain AUS leading scorer Justine Colley to 10 points though she tallied nine rebounds and eight assists. Laura Langille led SMU defensively hauling in 14 rebounds.

Lia St. Pierre continued her solid play for the X-Women, turning in a double-double evening with 15 points and 14 rebounds, along with five assists. Vanessa Pickard led the X-Women in scoring with 20 points while Melissa Gottschall scored 11 off the bench. 

Kolbi Roper contributed 10 points for StFX and Lindsay Lessard added nine points and seven rebounds.

The next game for the X-Women (3-6) on the AUS schedule is a game at home on Tuesday, Jan. 14th against the Cape Breton Capers (5-3). Tip-off is 6:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre.
