Track team opens competition at Halifax meet

Halifax, NS – The StFX track & field team competed in their first meet of the 2018-19 season Saturday in Halifax at the Canada Games Centre.

The X-Women had competitors in the 60m dash, 300m dash, 600m, 60m hurdles, high jump and long jump.

Veteran fifth year sprinter Allie Flower kicked off the season by setting a new StFX school record in the 600m dash, finishing at 1:36.61 in third place overall in the age 20-34 race. She also raced to a first place finish in the 300m dash with a time of 40.99. Her teammates Megan Graham (43.86) and Emma Boudreau (45.57) were right behind her in second and third place.

In the age 18-19 years 300m dash, X-Women sprinters Samantha Taylor (42.02), Olivia Crewe (43.39) and Michelle Vava (45.58) placed first, third and fourth, respectively. Vava also competed in the 600m race where she placed first with a time of 1:51.80.

In the age 18-19 years 60m dash, Taylor came third overall with a 7.92 clocking, while Crewe was fifth at 8.47. Lani Deakin competed in the age 20-34 years 60m dash and was fourth at 8.06, followed by X teammate Boudreau in fifth at 8.37. Deakin also competed in the high jump, winning the event with a 1.50m jump.

In the women's long jump, Baillie Marcotte came second with a 5.09m result and Erin Brennan was fourth at 4.69m.

Rounding out the X-Women results was Graham's first place showing in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 9.33.

In the men's event, StFX had competitors in the 60m dash, 300m dash, 600m, 1000m, 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

In the age 18-19 years 60m dash, Bradley Barclay (7.32) and Aidan McMann (8.47) came second and fifth, while in the age 20-34 race, Adrian Kinney (7.10) placed third for the X-Men, followed by Taylor Leger (7.57) in eighth and Riley Jennings (8.26) in 14th.

Barclay also raced in the age 18-19 years 300m dash where he topped the field with a time of 37.36. StFX teammate Alex Moore came second at 38.71. Kinney came third in the age 20-34 years 300m dash with a 36.25 result, followed by Eric Sutton (36.65) in fifth.

Four X-Men raced in the 600m event, including race winner Tim Brennan in the 20-34 years event as he clocked in at 1:22.60. Sutton was right behind him in second spot at 1:26.11. In the age 18-19 years race, Alexander Quinn came first with a 1:26.09 showing, while Moore was third at 1:30.43.

Leger was the lone StFX competitor in the 1000m race where he placed fifth at 2:52.27. He also raced to a second place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.88.

Freshman jumper Keiran Devine came third in the men's high jump with a 1.70m result. Leger was fourth at 1.65m. In the long jump, Kirishnia Cooper (6.30m), Garrette Vanderslyk (5.98m) and Leger (5.10m) came in second, fourth and sixth places, respectively for the X-Men. Cooper was first in the triple jump with a 12.57m jump.

The StFX track & field squad will next see action after the holiday break when they travel to Moncton on Saturday, January 12th for the Moncton Open.
