X-Women and X-Men wrap up Day 1 competition at McGill meet

MONTREAL – The first day of the 22nd annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet featured eight women's events and nine men's events on Friday, January 27th at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University.

The two-day event, billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada, will feature 18 university teams and 657 athletes with over 1,181 entries. Among the U SPORTS participating institutions are five from the Ontario (OUA) conference, eight from the RSEQ in Quebec and five from the Atlantic (AUS) region.

Friday's women's events featured the 60m dash, 1000m, 3000m, long jump, 20lb hammer throw, 4x200m relay, 4x800m relay and indoor pentathlon. The X-Women had entries in all but the two relay races and pentathlon.

Competing in the 60m dash for StFX in an event that featured 60 entries were Jill Murphy (26th, 8.15), Abbi Finnan (28th, 8.17), Emma Floris (33rd, 8.22), Megan Graham (37th, 8.29) and Allie Flower (38th, 8.30). The top 15 advanced to the final.

Paige Chisholm was the lone X-Woman who competed in the 1000m. She placed 25th amongst 51 runners with a time of 3:09.03.

In the 3000m event, Liz MacDonald was the top X finisher in 16th place with a time of 10:29.70, while Hana Marmura was 18th at 10:44.16. The event featured a field of 33.

Four X-Women competed in the 30-person long jump event including Lani Deakin who was 14th at 4.88m. Daneisha Bagot (21st, 4.69m), Hayley Wilson (22nd, 4.66m) and Mary Catherine Thompson (26th, 4.43m) also placed.

In the 20lb hammer throw, there was a total of 21 entries. Ellen Murphy, with a throw of 13.41m was 9th overall. Her X-Women teammates Hannah Pollock (12.69m) and Jessica Warrner (11.72m) were 10th and 12th, respectively.

After the eight events on day one of the meet the X-Women sit in 11th place amongst 12 teams with three points. Guelph (95), Laval (55) and Sherbrooke (53) are atop the leaderboard.  

Friday's men's events featured the 60m dash, 1000m, 3000m, long jump, high jump, 35lb hammer throw, 4x200m relay, 4x800m relay, pole vault and heptathlon. The X-Men had entries in all but the two relay races, pole vault and heptathlon.

Adrian Kinney continued his strong sprinting with a 7th place finish in the finals of the 60m dash. He clocked a time of 7.00 in the final and 6.99 in the preliminaries which ranked him third going in. Also competing in the 60m prelims for the X-Men were Jonny West (21st, 7.25), Steven Keefe (42nd, 7.45), Matt Murphy (50th, 7.51) and Garrette Vanderslyk (52nd, 7.53) amidst a field of 71 entries.

In the 1000m, Leo Jusiak (2:34.63) placed 15th overall and Ryan Washburn (2:40.76) was 28th. The event featured 53 racers.

Angus Rawling had a strong showing for the X-Men in the 3000m race, placing fifth overall with a time of 8:26.15 amongst 44 entries. Cal DeWolfe (8:36.12) was 15th, Paul MacLellan (8:58.90) was 24th and Addison Derhak (9:14.62) was 30th for StFX. Alex Cyr was entered but did not finish.

In the men's high jump, Cameron Glover placed 14th with a jump of 1.80m, while Kirishnia Cooper (1.65m) was 17th with 18 entries in the event.

In the 21-person long jump, Cooper was the top X-Men with a 6.20m result in 11th place. Glover was 13th at 5.96m and Vanderslyk was 15th at 5.77m.

Finally, in the 35lb hammer throw, Brad Wood was the lone X competitor. He placed seventh overall amidst a field of 16, registering in at 13.62m.

Overall in the nine events after day one the X-Men sit in seventh place with 11 points, out of 15 teams. The top three are Guelph (142.86), Dalhousie (46.20) and Laval (40).

Saturday's events will see the men's and women's 60m hurdles, 300m, 600m, 1500m, 4x400m relay, shot put and triple jump, along with the women's high jump and pole vault, and finish of the men's hepathlon.
