X-Men and X-Women track & field teams finish second at AUS championship

Moncton, NB – The X-Men and X-Women track & field teams competed at the Subway AUS championship at the Universite de Moncton this weekend, bringing home a total of 23 medals and second place finishes on both sides.

The blue and white squad won three gold, 12 silver and eight bronze medals.

Head coach Bernie Chisholm commented, "Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the team. This weekend we saw a lot of our athletes turn in personal bests, as well as StFX records. Each year we are seeing the program getting stronger, and we are looking forward to having some impactful recruits join our program next year."

Both the X-Men and X-Women squads came in second place behind Dalhousie who won both AUS championship banners.

In the men's team standings, Dalhousie earned 151 points while StFX had 95 and UNB came third with 72. The female Tigers scored 183 points, ahead of the X-Women's 91 and UNB's 57.  

Fifth year X-Women sprinter/jumper Bridget Brennan (Beechwood, NB) was honored as the Subway female athlete of the meet, the most valuable athlete of the championship. She was the gold medalist in the 300m race and won bronze in the pentathlon event. She took home another bronze medal as a member of the X-Women 4x400m relay team and finished just off the podium with a fourth place result in the long jump.

Hannah Pollock (Barrie, ON) was another gold medalist for the X-Women, claiming top spot in the weight throw. Her sister Hailey Pollock (Barrie, ON) won a pair of silver medals, placing in both the weight throw and the shot put.

Second year sprinter Abbi Finnan (Kingston, ON) won silver in the 60m hurdles, and both the X-Women 4x200m and 4x800m relay teams claimed silver medals.

The 4x200m relay team was comprised of Allie Flower (Lunenburg, NS), Beth Lawrence (Ardoise, NS), Finnan and Candace Cruickshank (Dartmouth, NS) while on the 4x800m squad was Kevyn Timmons (Calgary, AB), Lawrence, Hana Marmura (Antigonish, NS) and Liz MacDonald (Bedford, NS).

The X-Women 4x400m relay team of Lawrence, Brennan, Cruickshank and Flower won the bronze medal.

Finnan took home her third medal of the weekend with a bronze medal performance in the 60m dash. Jumper Hayley Wilson (Skye Glen, NS) rounded out the X-Women's 11 medals with a bronze in the triple jump.

The X-Men results saw one gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.

The X-Men 4x200m relay team edged the Tigers for the gold medal in that race. Team members were Matt Murphy (Halifax, NS), Adrian Kinney (Bristol, NB), James Lucas (Chester, NS) and Randy Roseway (Ottawa, ON).

Both the 4x400m and 4x800m X-Men relay squads won silver. Members of the 4x400m team included Andrew Bain (Gatineau, QC), Timothy Brennan (Beechwood, NB), Steven Keefe (Antigonish, NS) and Lucas, while on the 4x800m relay team was Calvin DeWolfe (Bridgewater, NS), Angus Rawling (Calgary, AB), Nick Favero (Rockland, ON) and Alex Cyr (Abram-Village, PE).

Cyr ran to a silver medal performance in the 3000m event and took home his third medal of the championship with a bronze in the 1500m.

Other silver medalists for the blue and white were Rawling in the 1000m, Shawn Costello (Fredericton, NB) in the weight throw, Cameron Glover (Murray River, PE) in the high jump and Jake McKenna (Calgary, AB) in the heptathlon.

Teammate Jordan Tyrrell (Dorval, QC) claimed the bronze medal in the grueling heptathlon, alongside McKenna, who won his second medal of the meet with a bronze in the 60m hurdles.

Rounding out the X-Men medals was dual-sport athlete Randy Roseway, also a member of the AUS champion X-Men football team, who won bronze in the 60m dash.
