X-Men 9th at McGill meet

Montreal, QC – The X-Men track & field team competed at the 21st annual McGill Team Challenge at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday, placing ninth overall amongst 16 teams. The indoor meet is one of the largest in the country, drawing hundreds of athletes each year.

The X-Men squad had athletes competing in sprinting events, distance races, heptathlon, throwing and jumping events.

In the 60m dash, five X-Men competed in the preliminaries including Lucas James who came 15th with a time of 7.30, qualifying for the final. He ran a 7.31 in the final, maintaining his 15th position.

Adrian Kinney (7.39) was 25th in the prelims, while Matt Murphy (7.41) was 28th, Steven Keefe (7.53) came 42nd and Tim Brennan (7.58) was 42nd amongst the field of 61 sprinters.

The same four X-Men competing in the 300m dash, along with Andrew Bain who was the top X finisher at 19th, posting a time of 36.73. Keefe (36.78) came 20th, Kinney (36.92) was 24th, Brennan (37.24) placed 30th, Murphy (37.39) was 35th and Justin Major (38.04) came 44th for the X-Men. A total of 61 racers competed.

Another 60 racers took part in the 600m event. Bain was again the top X-Men coming in 18th with a 1:23.27 result. Brennan (1:24.98) was 29th, followed by Ryan Washburn (1:26.89) in 40th and Major (1:30.09) in 56th.

Washburn was the lone StFX competitor in the 1000m race where he placed 41st overall with a time of 2:47.37.

In the distance racers, five X-Men competed in both the 1500m and 3000m events. Calvin DeWolfe claimed a top ten spot in the 3000m, coming in 10th place with a time of 8:36.06, out of 42 racers. He was 17th overall in the 1500m race at 3:59.22.

Alex Cyr was the top X-Men in the 1500m, finished at 3:58.42. Angus Rawling (4:04.08) was 28th overall in the 1500m, followed by teammates Nick Favero (4:09.27) in 41st and Paul MacLellan (4:13.71) in 47th in a large field of 72.

In the 3000m, Rawling came 18th at 8:48.53, while Favero (8:58.50) was 24th and MacLellan (9:13.97) was 29th. Cyr was disqualified in the event.

Two X-Men sprinters ran the 60m hurdles. Colin Thompson was seventh overall in both the preliminaries and finals, posting a 9.22 in the prelims and 9.25 in the final. Tim Brennan came 10th in the prelims at 9.72.

The X-Men 4x400m relay team had a fourth place showing in a field of nine teams. Lucas, Keefe, Brennan and Bain posted a time of 3:26.08 in the event.

Thompson was the lone X jumper at the meet, but did not post a result in the long jump due to a fouled jump.

Ryan Kennedy represented the X-Men in both the shot put and weight throw. He placed 14th in the shot put with a 10.92m throw and 15th in the weight throw with a 12.61m result.

Rounding out the StFX field was Jordan Tyrrell and Jake McKenna in the grueling heptathlon. Tyrrell placed sixth overall in the field of 11 competitors while McKenna was right behind him in seventh spot. Tyrell tallied 4207 points and McKenna had 4091.

In the individual heptathlon events, Tyrell won the 1000m, was third in the high jump, seventh in the 60m dash, eighth in both the 60m hurdles and long jump, ninth in the pole vault and tenth in the shot put.

McKenna came fourth in the high jump and 1000m, fifth in the 60m dash and 60m hurdles, seventh in the long jump, and 11th in the shotput and pole vault.

With 15 points, the X-Men placed ninth overall in the meet's team standings in a field of 16 teams. Dalhousie were the meet winners with 138.5 points, followed by Laval (110) and Sherbrooke (108).
