StFX track team opens season at Halifax meet

Halifax, NS – The StFX track & field team opened 2015-16 competition at the Athletics Nova Scotia meet held Saturday at the Canada Games Centre.

The StFX squad had X-Women and X-Men competing in numerous different running and jumping events.

WOMEN'S RESULTS

In the women's hurdles, Bridget Brennan placed third overall with a time of 9.49.

Kevyn Timmons won the women's 1000m race for StFX with a time of 3:09.40.

In the 60m dash for women aged 18-19, the X-Women had four racers who placed third through sixth. Competing for X were Savannah Norton (3rd, 8.37), Mary Catherine Thompson (4th, 8.43), Allie Flower, (5th, 8.45) and Perissa Forbes (6th, 8.46).

In the 60m dash for women aged 20 and older, the X-Women had seven competitors including veteran sprinter Eilish MacQuarrie who was third overall with a time of 7.97. Right behind her were X teammates Jillian Murphy (4th, 8.00), Abbi Finnan (5th, 8.04) and Candace Cruickshank (6th, 8.07). Lauren Agnew (8.13) placed 8th while Beth Lawrence (8.37) and Jillian Nolan (8.63) were 9th and 11th.

Lawrence was the top X-Women finisher in the 600m, coming in fifth with a time of 1:42.34. Brittany Wadden was eighth at 1:55.82.

Hana Marmura and Liz MacDonald both competed in the 1500m event. Marmura (4:56.87) was the first place finisher in the women's age 18-9 race, while MacDonald (5:17.24) was fifth in the women's age 20 and over race.

The 300m dash featured several X-Women sprinters. In the age 18-19 race, Allie Flower was second at 43.42, followed by Perissa Forbes (45.18) in third. In the age 20+ race, Bridget Brennan claimed top honors with a time of 41.15. Candace Cruickshank (41.39) and Eilish MacQuarrie (41.46) were second and third, followed by Jillian Murphy (6th, 42.65), Beth Lawrence (7th, 43.39), Abbi Finnan (9th, 43.69) and Jillian Nolan (10th, 46.60).

In the longest race of the day, StFX's Kristen Tate and Kendra MacNeil were the sole competitors in the women's 3000m run. Tate finished with a time of 11:52.97 in the age 18-19 category, while MacNeil ran 11:03.61 in the age 20+ classification.

In the jumping events, Mary Catherine Thompson came fifth in the high jump (age 18-19) with a 1.45m showing. She placed second in the long jump with a 4.64m effort.

Lauren Agnew (1.50m) and Bridget Brennan (1.50m) were fourth and fifth for the X-Women in the high jump (age 20 and older). Brennan won the long jump with a 5.46m jump, while Agnew was fifth at 4.98m and rookie Madison Nastasiuk was sixth with a 4.47m jump.

MEN'S RESULTS

In the men's hurdles, Colin Thompson and Jake McKenna placed first and second respectively, for the X-Men. Thompson's time was 9.22 with McKenna at 9.35. Jordan Tyrrell (9.55) and Timothy Brennan (9.59) were fourth and fifth.

Two X-Men freshmen raced in the 60m dash for age 18-9. James Lucas (7.26) placed fourth while Creighton Jewkes (7.77) was seventh.

In the men's 60m dash for age 20 and older, Matt Murphy came third overall with a time of 7.37 with Steven Keefe in fourth at 7.38.

Timothy Brennan and Justin Major came first and third, respectively in the men's 600m run (age 18-19). Brennan's time was 1:24.96 and Major clocked in at 1:30.84.

In the same 600m distance but in the age 20+ category, Andrew Bain ran 1:28.22, good enough for third spot.

Several X-Men sprinters competed in the 300m dash. In the men's age 18-19 race, James Lucas was second, crossing the finish line at 36.54. Timothy Brennan (37.67) was fifth, Justin Major (39.18) was sixth and Creighton Jewkes (39.45) seventh. In the men's age 20+ race, Andrew Bain (36.96) and Steven Keefe (36.97) were third and fourth, while Matt Murphy (38.14) came sixth.

In the jumping events, Cameron Glover (1.70m) and Creighton Jewkes (1.65) came 1-2 in the men's age 18-19 high jump. In the same age classification for the long jump, Glover placed second with a jump of 5.64m and Jewkes was third at 5.23m.

Jake McKenna (1.75m) and Jordan Tyrrell (1.70m) were third and fourth in the men's age 20+ high jump. Tyrrell was sixth in the long jump with a 5.83m effort, while McKenna was seventh (5.83m) and Colin Thompson placed eighth (5.63m). Thompson came third in the triple jump with an 11.59m result.

The StFX track & field team will back at the Canada Games Centre on January 16th for another Athletics NS meet. The throwers will compete on January 9th in Truro.
