StFX track athletes represent at CIS championship

Edmonton, AB – Several members of the X-Women and X-Men track and field team competed this past weekend at the CIS championship, hosted by the University of Alberta.

First year sprinter Andrew Bain from Gatineau, QC competed in the 600m event and placed 11th overall in his heat. His 1:22.76 time was better than his qualifying time, though he failed to advance to the finals.

Fellow sprinter Mackenzie Munroe, a Yarmouth, NS native, represented the X-Men in the 300m race and placed 10th overall in the heats with a time of 35.91. The top eight runner moved on to the final,

Both Bain and Munroe were members of the X-Men 4x400m relay team, along with first year runner Adam Mitchell from Dartmouth, NS and veteran Max Maund from Courtnay, BC. They placed 12th overall in the race with a time of 3:23.86, improving on their AUS champion qualifying time of 3:26.44.

Distance runner Bryden Tate, a third year athlete from Heatherton, NS and AUS male track athlete of the year, competed in both the 1000m and 1500m races on the weekend.  In the 1000m race, Tate ran a personal best time of 2:31.15 en route to a 10th place showing. He came 13th in the 1500m race with a time of 4:02.72.

In the field events, AUS champion in the shot put, Robert Kennedy, a second year thrower from Truro, NS had throws of 13.42m, 13.24m and 13.89m in the national shot put event, but failed to make the top eight qualifiers for the final.

On the women's side, AUS female track athlete of the year Eilish MacQuarrie, a third year sprinter from Antigonish, NS competed in the 300m race where she posted a time of 40.07. She was ninth overall and just missed the qualifying cut-off for the final.

MacQuarrie also competed as a member of the X-Women 4x200m relay team, along with first year runners Abbi Finnan (Kingston, ON) and Jillian Murphy (Port Williams, NS) and third year runner Bridget Brennan from Beechwood, NB. The team placed 12th overall in the heats with a time of 1:44.80. The top eight moved on the finals.

Rounding out the StFX competitors was Melissa Hardy, veteran distance runner from Deer Lake, NL. Hardy ran the 3000m race and paced 13th overall with a time of 10:20.25.

In team results, the York Lions won the men's CIS title, with the Guelph Gryphons winning the women's title.
