X-Men post strong showing at Halifax meet

The X-Men track and field team was back in competition this past Saturday at the Nova Scotia Athletics meet held at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.

StFX had numerous competitors in the majority of events with several first place finishes.

Thomas Faour placed first in the men's (age 18-19) 300m sprint with a time of 38.17, while Adam Mitchell was first in the same event in the age 20-34 age category with a 36.66 showing. Mitchell also claimed top spot in the long jump with a 5.87m jump.

Defending AUS champion in the 300m and 600m events Mackenzie Munroe was first in the 600m race in Halifax with a time of 1:23.58, and finished just behind Mitchell in the 300m event at 36.86.

Scott Donald (age 20-34) and Alex Neuffer (age 18-19) each took home a pair of first place finishes in track events. Donald was first in the 1000m with a tie of 2:33.21, then followed up with top spot in the 1500m event at 4:07.35.

Neuffer was first in the (age 18-19) 1500m at 4:06.67 and also in the 3000m with a clocking of 9:05.13.

X-Man Lee Wesselius claimed top spot in the (age 20-34) 3000m race with an 8:33.49 event, marking a personal best time and finihsing ahead of 2013 AUS individual cross country champion John Kuto from SMU.

Also competing for X in the 3000m was Stuart MacPherson (9:15.33) and Ryan Hatchard (9:42.83) who placed seventh and eighth.

In the (age 18-19) 3000m race, Nick Favero (9:34.09) was third, Warren Ferguson (9:46.53) was fourth and Matt Eliot (10:24.11) was sixth.

The same three runners also competed with Neuffer in the 1500m event in the age 18-19 category. Favero (4:27.43) placed third, followed by Eliot (4:30.93) and Ferguson (4:30.99) in third and fourth positions.

In the (age 20-34) 1500m race, four X-Men placed second through fifth, respectively, behind Donald. Bryden Tate ran a time of 4:09.75, followed by Cal DeWolfe (4:12.17), Ryan Hatchard (4:21.34) and Ryan O'Regan (4:29.07).

In the 1000m race for 20-34 years of age, Tate (2:35.58), DeWolfe (2:41.22), O'Regan (2:45.16) and Gabe Quenneville (2:48.26) were second through fifth behind Donald.

The X-Men had three sprinters in the 60m dash including Matt Murphy in third place with a 7:29 clocking, Adam Mitchell, also with 7.29 in fourth, and Jake McKenna (7.68) in tenth.

The 300m race featured Andrew Bain (36.91), Murphy (37.26) and Ben Munroe (38.16) in third, fourth and fifth places behind StFX teammates Adam Mitchell and MacKenzie Munroe.

Thomas Faour and Ryan Washburn each competed for the X-Men in the (age 18-19) 600m race, placing second and third, respectively, with times of 1:26.97 and 1:27.55.

The (age 20-34) 600m saw Bain (1:24.31), Ben Munroe (1:27.15) and Quenneville (1:31.02) finish 2-3-4 after teammate Mackenzie Munroe, brother to Ben.

McKenna was the lone X-Man in the 60m hurdles, placing second with a time of 9.25. He and Ben Munroe also competed in the long jump where Munroe was second (5.59m) and McKenna third (5.49m) behind their teammates Mitchell (5.87m).

Rounding out the field events were five X-Men competing in the shot put and four in the weight throw.

Robert Kennedy, a transfer from Dalhousie University had the top showing in each event, throwing 13.64m in the shot and 13.34m in the weight throw to place second in both events.

Also placing in the shot put for the X-Men were Dennis Brianski (12.68m) in fourth, Liam Walsh (12.29m) in fifth, Bradley Wood (11.41m) in sixth and Brendan Nickles (10.05m) in eighth.

Walsh (10.26m), Wood (9.66m) and Nickles (9.51m) were third, fourth and fifth in the weight throw behind Kennedy.

Current CIS individual track and field rankings feature Mackenzie Munroe ranked fifth overall in Canada in the 600m event.

Next on the schedule for the X-Men is a meet in Montreal at McGill University on January 24th and 25th, featuring some of the top competitors in the country.
