StFX track athletes compete at Canada Games

Track and field competition wrapped up this past weekend at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que. with nine athletes with StFX connections posting results in numerous different events.

Third year X-Women sprinter Eilish MacQuarrie from Antigonish, NS competed in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m events. In the 200m event, MacQuarrie posted a 25.29 qualifying time, then finished third overall in the B final with a 25.40 sprint. In the 400m event, she ran a 56.53 qualifying time and in the A final placed fifth at 57.24. MacQuarrie and her Nova Scotia teammates posted a time of 3:49.97 in the 4x400m relay heats, then followed up with a fourth place showing in the A final at 3:46.00.

Fellow X-Women teammate Bridget Brennan from Beechwood, NB competed in the 4x100m event with her province but were unfortunately disqualified and did not make it through to the final. Individually Brennan competed in the 400m and long jump events. She ran 58.82 in the 400m qualifying heats, then placed seventh overall in the B final with a time of 59.78. In the long jump, Brennan's 4.96m qualifying jump wasn't strong enough to push her through to the final event.

Other current members of the X-Women competing in Sherbrooke were Melissa Hardy from Deer Lake, NF and Lynette Manuel from Oromocto, NB, who both participated in the 5000m race. Hardy ran an impressive race, finishing sixth overall with a time of 17:40.31. Manual clocked in at 19:14.57 in 18th place. Earlier in the week Hardy ran in the 1500m but her qualifying time of 4:41.09 did not advance her to the final race.

X-Men sprinter Mackenzie Munroe from Yarmouth, NS competed with the Nova Scotia 4x400m relay team. After posting the second fastest qualifying time of 3:15.13, Munroe and teammates took home the bronze medal with a 3:14.40 showing in the A final.

Third year X-ManWill Forsey from Kippens, NF competed in the 800m event in Sherbrooke, where he recorded a qualifying time of 2:00.28, followed up with 2:1.48 good enough for sixth place in the B final.

Lee Wesselius from Salisbury, NB participated in the 3000m steeple and was a respectable seventh amongst 17 total competitors, finishing with a time of 9:25.35.

Bryden Tate, also a current member of the X-Men, competed in the final track event on the schedule, the men's 5000m race. His time of 15:5.26 garnered a 10th place finish in his heat, with his former StFX teammate Connor McGuire behind him in 11th at 15:16.56. McGuire is a recent graduate. Incoming freshman Alex Cyr from PEI was also scheduled to compete in the 5000m race but had to withdraw due to injury.

The X-Women and X-Men cross country team are set to begin their 2013 AUS training camp on August 31st.
