Wolfville, NS – The StFX X-Men wrapped up AUS regular season play with a 2-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen Friday evening at Raymond field.

The X-Men finish with an impressive 9-1-2 record and 29 points, having clinched a first round playoff berth. The Cape Breton Capers (9-0-1) with 28 points have the other bye with and have two games left to play. They will serve as the Subway AUS Championship hosts next weekend, November 2-5.

In Wolfville, X-Men forward Dan Hayfield made history as his goal in the 41st minute – the first one of the game and his league-leading 13th of the season – broke the StFX X-Men single-season scoring record.  Hayfield surpassed four former X-Men with 12-goal seasons in the record book including Cliff Baird (1966), Glenn MacDougall (1988), Jamie Howlett (1988) and Michael Marousek (2011).

His goal was the only one of the first half as the X-Men took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Each team had several scoring chances in the second half and Liam Harrigan finally found the back of the net for the X-Men with a late marker in the 87th minute.

The feisty Axemen fought back however, with a goal of their own by Cooper Coats in the 90th minute. Their comeback was halted though as the game time expired and the X-Men held on for their ninth win of the season.

Veteran fifth year defender Alex Taylor was honored as the Subway player of the game for his strong play.

Thomas Pieroway picked up the win for the X-Men.

The Axemen (5-4-2) still have one game remaining in AUS regular season play. They will host UPEI on Saturday at 5:15 pm.
