X-Men fall to Sea-Hawks in AUS quarter-final

Men's soccer quarterfinal #2
Memorial defeat X-Men 2-1 to advance to semifinal

(ST. JOHN'S, NF) - The sixth-ranked Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the third-place X-Men 2-1 in the second quarterfinal match of the Subway AUS men's soccer championship Friday evening at King George V Park.

In the 13th minute, third year defender Serge Dossou (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring and put the X-Men on the board with an unassisted goal.

Seventeen minutes into the game, Sea-Hawks forward Jordi Slaney (St. Lawrence, NF) scampered up the right side of the field and set the ball up for defenseman Ben Collingwood (St. John's, NF) who came close but couldn't get past X-Men keeper Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, NF).

Sea-Hawks captain Matthew Hamlyn (St. John's, NF) took a free shot in front of the net that was intercepted by the StFX defense in the 40th minute.

In the last minute of the opening half rookie Natneal Tecle (Calgary, AB) of StFX tried to put one in the back of Memorial's net but was shut down by keeper Andrew Anson (Ottawa, ON)

At the half the X-Men led 1-0 and had a total of four shots. The Sea-Hawks had five shots in the first half.

Rookie Sea-Hawk Kyle Williams (Goulds, NF) came close to tying it up when he had a breakaway in the 53rd minute. The attempt was stopped by Pieroway but a determined Williams came back two minutes later and put Memorial on the board in the 55th minute.

When the clock hit 69 minutes the X-Men took advantage of a Memorial miscue and there were two attempts on the Sea-Hawks net by Tecle and Kallen Heenan (Halifax, NS).

It was the host Sea-Hawks that sealed their ticket to the semifinals in the 80th minute when Williams weaved his way up the sideline passed the StFX defence and set up forward Aaron Anstey giving the Sea-Hawks a 2-1 victory.

The Subway AUS Player of the Game for Memorial was forward Aaron Anstey. Player of the game honours went to Serge Dossou for StFX.

The Sea-Hawks will now face the top ranked Varsity Reds at King George V at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinal.
