(Halifax, N.S.) – Corbin Boes's (Saskatoon, SK) first shutout of the season was the difference on Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum as the Dalhousie Tigers topped the visiting StFX X-Men 2-0.
Boes stopped all 49 shots he faced in the win. X-Men goalie Chase Marchand (Halifax, NS) played admirably in the loss, stopping 25 of 27 Dalhousie shots.
Despite the U Sports No. 2 ranked X-Men outshooting Dalhousie 26-10 in the opening 20 minutes, it was the Tigers who went into the first intermission up 1-0.
Forward Alex Pawelczyk (Detroit, MI) tapped in a loose puck at 13:18 on the power play, after the original save was made by Marchand.
The X-Men had plenty of chances to open the scoring, as well as tie the game up in the first frame.
Their best opportunity came off of a shot by forward Eric Locke (Toronto, ON) five minutes in that beat Boes but not the post.
Aside from the shot off the iron, Boes was excellent, stopping everything else that came his way in the opening period.
His best save came just over three minutes into the contest, as he sprawled to his left to make a diving stop on forward Nathan Pancel (Ottawa, ON).
The X-Men were the aggressors to start the second period as well, but Boes continued to shut the door on the visitors, including a few impressive stops while his team was fighting off a 5-on-3.
Dalhousie would yet again reward their goalie at 8:05, as forward Fabian Walsh (Gloucester, ON) made a couple quick moves in front and was able to beat Marchand with a backhand shot.
Forward Tanner Williams (Iroquois, ON) had an excellent chance to increase the host's lead to three at 11:35 on a 2-on-1, but was robbed by Marchand who made an excellent save while falling backwards.
Both goaltenders were impressive in the third period. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, as the Tigers preserved their two-goal lead.
The X-Men's best chance came at 2:05 on an open look from forward Adam Stevens (Bedford, NS), while Marchard's best stop came at 7:46 as he made an impressive glove save on a partial breakaway for Dalhousie.
With the win, Dalhousie advanced to 6-7-3, while the X-Men fall to 10-6-0.
The Tiger's next action goes on Friday on the road against Moncton, while StFX will host Moncton the following day.
