Fredericton, NB – The CIS ranked No. 7 StFX X-Men defeated the The St. Thomas Tommies 5-1 in AUS men's hockey action Saturday night in front of over 500 fans at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

Tommies goaltender Tyson Teichmann made 38 saves in the loss, while Drew Owsley only allowed one goal on 21 shots in the victory for StFX.

"They were a good team, they pushed on us hard. We gave up too many odd man rushes, and they capitalized on their chances," Tommies head coach Kyle McAllister said after the game.

St. Thomas, who defeated the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night, were looking for their first two-game winning streak since 2011. They came out strong against the heavily favored X-Men, with Connor Sanvido scoring three minutes into the game on the power play.  The Tommies continued to control the momentum in the first, and headed into the intermission with a one goal lead.

The Tommies started the second period with back to back holding penalties by Anthony Latina and Brayden Wood. The latter resulted in a power play goal by Nathan Pancel to tie the game.

StFX dictated the play for much of the frame outshooting the home squad 15-8, and with less than five minutes to go in the second Adam Stevens scored to give the X-Men a 2-1 advantage heading into the final twenty minutes.

The third period was all StFX, showing why they are only one point back of top spot in the AUS. They came out firing, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of the period, the first coming from a slap shot by Jagger Dirk, while a minute later Pancel added his second of the game.

Steven Kuhn scored with less than a minute to go in the third period to make it 5-1 for the X-Men.

With the win, StFX improves to 15-3-3, just one point back of both UNB and Acadia for top spot in the conference. The loss gives the Tommies a record of 2-18-1.

St. Thomas is back in action Wednesday when they visit the UNB Varsity Reds. The X-Men travel to Wolfville on Wednesday to face the Acadia Axemen. Puck drop for both games is 7:00 pm.
