X-Men defeat CIS No. 2 Huskies

Halifax, NS – The StFX X-Men defeated the CIS No. 2 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies 5-4 Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum. Rob Slaney (Portgual Cove, NF) and Ted Stephens (Whitehorse, YT) each had a goal and an assist for the X-Men.

Stephens' goal at 9:39 of the first period opened the scoring, and Slaney's marker at 7:56 of the second period tied the game at 3-3 heading into the third period. Nathan Chiarlitti (Maple, ON), who scored the game winning goal at 8:44 of the third period, was named the Subway player of the game.

After Stephens' goal made it 1-0, Bradley Greene (Tilting, NF) answered back for the Huskies at 14:03 to tie the game heading into the first intermission.  The Huskies second goal came from Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, NS) at 3:34 of the second period. 

Defenseman Michael D'Orazio (Richmond Hill, ON) increased the home team's lead to 3-1 at the 6:16 mark.  The X-Men's Michael Kirkpatrick (North Sydney, NS) cut the lead to 3-2 at 7:31 on the power play, followed by Slaney's goal making it another deadlock at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

The Huskies came back with a goal from Francis Menard (Embrun, ON) at 4:02 of the third period on the power play to give the Huskies a 4-3 advantage.  The X-Men quickly tied it up with a goal from Zack MacQueen (Woodstock, ON) at the 7:59 mark.  Chiarlitti's game winner came less than a minute later for StFX.

Saint Mary's outshot the X-Men 31-27.  X-Men goaltender Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, AB) made 27 saves for the win, while Anthony Peters (Blyth, ON) stopped 22 shots in net for the Huskies.

StFX next hit the ice against the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night at 7:00 pm in Halifax, while the Huskies host Acadia Friday night at the Forum to close up the first semester.
