Owsley backstops StFX to win over Panthers

Bronson Maschmeyer's goal 7:21 into the third period proved to be the decider as the StFX X-Men edged the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in Charlottetown Friday night.

Subway player of the game Drew Owsley delivered an impressive performance in the StFX net, turning aside 39 shots for the win as the Panthers outshot the X-Men 40-26 in the game.

The teams were held scoreless after 20 minutes of play.

X-Men leading scorer Rob Slaney broke the goose egg at the 9:35 mark of the second period as he scored for StFX. Assists came from Josh Day and Michael Kirkpatrick.

The Panthers tied it up at 14:45 with a goal by Dana Fraser. Chris Desousa and Matthew Maione had the helpers and the 1-1 tie held until intermission.

Shots were 22-12 in favor of the Panthers after two periods of play.

Owsley made several key saves for the X-Men in the third period to keep them in the game.

Maschmeyer blasted a shot from the point as the defenseman scored the go-ahead and eventual game winner off assists by Ted Stephens and Cory MacIntosh with 12:39 left to play.

The Panthers pressured but were unable to score the equalizer as the X-Men held on for the road victory.

Mavric Parks took the loss in the Panthers net with 24 saves.

With the win, the X-Men improve to 7-5-1 on the season and will travel to Fredericton for a Saturday evening game against the St. Thomas Tommies (3-9-1) to close out AUS regular season play for the first half.

The Panthers drop to 5-5-1 and will try to regroup for their Saturday night game against Saint Mary's (7-6-0), also at home.
