X-Men suffer road loss to Huskies

In a dominant third period, the visiting StFX X-Men (5-5-1) outshot the Saint Mary's Huskies (5-6-0) 16 to 3, but could not rally for the win Saturday night in AUS hockey action. The Huskies, who scored the first three goals of the game, defeated the X-Men 6-4 in Halifax.

After falling behind 6-2 early in the third period, the blue and white sliced the disadvantage in half on goals from Zack MacQueen (unassisted) and Cole Grbavac, before the 10-minute mark. Brad Cuzner and Murdock MacLellan assisted on the Grbavac marker.

In the final minutes of regulation, the X-Men could not beat Anthony Peters, who made 28 saves in the Huskies' win.

By the 15-minute mark of the opening period, the Huskies led 3-0 on goals from Jeff Marchand, Stephen Gillard and Matt Tipoff, with the man advantage.

At 18:13, Cory MacIntosh put the X-Men on the board, with assists going to Ted Stephens and Spencer McAvoy.

The Huskies regained their three-goal advantage at 2:05 of the second period, when Ryan Hillier beat X-Men goalie Morgan Clark, who relieved started Drew Owsley in the first frame.

At 6:49, a shorthanded goal from Cuzner, assisted by Jason Bast, trimmed the Huskies' lead to 4-2. Less than four minutes later, Gerrad Grant made it 5-2 for the home team.

At 2:53 of the third period, Tipoff, with his second of the night, made it 6-2.

For the game, the X-Men outshot the Huskies 32 to 23.

The X-Men return to action Wednesday, Nov. 27, when they host the CIS No. 4 Acadia Axemen (10-1-0). Game time is 7 p.m. at the Keating Centre.
