X-Men on losing end of 3-2 overtime game

The StFX X-Men played a close game against the CIS No. 4 Acadia Axemen in Wolfville Wednesday night but came out on the losing end of a 3-2 overtime game.

Subway player of the game Christopher Owens scored 1:45 into overtime while on the power play to give the Axemen their eighth consecutive victory.

Owens one-timed a pass from across the point by Brett Thompson as his slap shot beat StFX goaltender Drew Owsley under the cross bar. StFX was called for a tripping infraction 1:27 into the extra frame.

StFX captain Josh Day had tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period. Zack MacQueen assisted on the goal at 2:23 as Day's slap shot from the point through traffic fooled Axemen netminder Evan Mosher.

The game remain deadlocked through to the end of regulation. StFX had a chance to go ahead with a late power play opportunity but despite several shots on net were unable to solve Mosher, who registered 23 saves in the victory.

After a scoreless first period, Thompson got the Axemen on the board 1:17 into the second frame as he picked up a redirected puck in front of the X net and made no mistake. Liam Heelis and Mike Cozzola assisted on the play.

The X-Men wasted no time in closing the gap as Michael Kirkpatrick banged in a rebound after a goal crease scramble just under two minutes later. Rob Slaney and Blake Gal had the helpers.

Acadia's second goal came at 12:40 of the second period on a delayed penalty call and another goal crease scramble. Leo Jenner was credited with the marker as Heelis and Geoff Schemitsch assisted.

The Axemen outshot the X-Men by a 35-25 margin in the game as they improved to 9-1-0 on the season and slid into first place with a one point advantage over UNB (8-1-1).

The X-Men (5-4-1) sit in third place, six points back of the Varsity Reds.
