X-Men fall to Boston squads

The X-Men hockey team travelled south of the border to Boston for a pair of exhibition games against NCAA opponents and were held winless. Saturday evening, they lost a close 2-1 game to Boston University, then on Sunday fell 8-2 to Boston College.

Saturday's match saw the two teams exchange first period power play goals as Nick Roberto scored for the Terriers at 15:27, then Rob Slaney followed up for the X-Men at 17:02. Michael Kirkpatrick and Jason day picked up the assists on the Slaney goal.

No goals were scored in a penalty-filled second period and it was Boston's Tommy Kelly who notched the game winner with just over three minutes left in the third.

Shots were 45-32 in favor of the Terriers who used three different goalies in each period of the game. Drew Owsley took the loss in the StFX net, making 43 saves.

In Sunday's 8-2 loss to the Boston College Eagles, StFX got off to a good start taking a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Michael Kirkpatrick capped off a three-point weekend scoring both goals for the X-Men. His first came at 13:31 from Slaney and Blake Gal, then he notched his second of the game on the power play at 17:30. Jason Bast and Spencer McAvoy had the helpers.

The remainder of the game was all Eagles as they scored five unanswered goals in the second period to take a commanding 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Goals were scored by Kevin Hayes, Chris Calnan, Bill Arnold, Cam Spiro on a penalty shot,
and Austin Cangelosi. All were even strength.

The third period saw three more Eagles even strength goals from three new scorers in Patrick Bowen, Peter McMullen and Johnny Gaudreau.

When all was said and done, shots ended 29-18 in favour of Boston, who split their goaltending duties three ways.

StFX's Morgan Clark played the entire game making 21 saves.

The X-Men's pre-season record now stands at 3-3 with one exhibition game remaining on the schedule. They will travel to Truro, NS on October 11th to play Saint Mary's in a 7:00 pm game.

The AUS regular season opens on October 18th and 19th when the X-Men travel to UNB and Moncton.
