X-Men skate to exhibition win over Tommies

The StFX X-Men skated to a 4-1 win over the St. Thomas Tommies in AUS exhibition hockey action Friday night in New Glasgow.

X-Men head coach Brad Peddle commented, "I felt we had a pretty good effort overall tonight. We were able to jump out to a 4-0 lead after two periods with some very good pressure. The third period we sat on our lead a little too much, but I give full credit to St. Thomas who competed real hard to the end."

Peddle continued, "We showed some good team speed and generated some very good chances off our fore check. I liked how we moved the puck quickly as we continue to work on our transition game and prepare for the regular season."

The blue and white led 2-0 after the opening period on goals from freshman Blake Gal and veteran R.D. Chisholm.

Less than three minutes in, Gal's point shot made it through a crowd and found the back of the net behind Alex St. Arnaud. Sophomore Ted Stephens assisted.

At 10:50 of the opening period, Chisholm doubled the advantage on assists from Gabriel O'Connor and freshman Rob Slaney.

On the power play, Cole Grbavac, from Ted Stephens, tapped in a rebound to give the blue and white a 3-0 lead in the second period.

Slaney, unassisted, made it 4-0 when he caught St. Arnaud out of his goal crease.

In the third period, the Tommies spoiled the shutout of Drew Owsley on a power play goal from Yuri Cheremetiev. Alexandre Leduc and Colin Martin assisted.

Owsley, an X-Men sophomore, made 25 saves for the win. The X-Men outshot the Tommies 28-26.

The X-Men will be back in action Friday, Oct. 4, when they play the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in Shediac, NB.

StFX will wrap-up the pre-season weekend with their traditional visit to New England, when they will face Boston University (Saturday, Oct. 5) and Boston College (Saturday, Oct. 6).
