X-Men claim Coach K Invitational tournament title

Antigonish, NS – The STFX X-Men went 3-0 over the weekend to claim the 43rd annual Coach K Invitational tournament title on their own home court. They defeated the Cape Breton Capers 92-46 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-day event.

The X-Men also had victories over Calgary, 82-73 and Memorial, 100-88 as their own the tournament title for the 22nd time in its history.

COACH K INVITATIONAL HISTORY

Fourth year X-Men forward David Muenkat was named tournament MVP for the second consecutive year, receiving the Ernie Foshay Memorial Award.

X-Men Gatluak James and Dondre Reddick earned spots on the tournament all-star team, as did Osman Omar (Cape Breton), Boris Ristanovic (Memorial) and Ezeoha Santiago (Calgary).

In Sunday's game, the X-Men got out to a 15-11 lead after the first quarter of play and were up by 12 at halftime by a 33-21 score.

Gatluak James scored 14 points in the opening half for STFX, while Dondre Redick scored seven. Mitchell Mersereau netted seven for the Capers in the first half.

STFX outpaced the Capers 30-14 in the third quarter to go up 63-35, then held the Capers to only 11 points in the fourth on route to the 92-46 victory.

James finished with a game-high 18 points for X, along with a double-double afternoon, pulling in 14 rebounds and was named the STFX player of the game.

Antoine Vernon scored 12, while Reddick, Keyonte Beals and Bennett Grumbach each contributed nine points in the win. The STFX bench scored 59.

Justus Peuser lead the Capers with 11 points. CBU player of the game Mitchell Mersereau scored nine and had six rebounds.

This weekend marks the end of pre-season exhibition play as the AUS regular season begins on Wednesday, October 26th. The X-Men will host the Acadia Axemen in an 8:00 pm on Coach K Court.
