X-Men wrap up season with win over Sea-Hawks

St. John's, NF - The StFX X-Men (5-13) earned a series split after topping the Memorial Sea-Hawks (7-13) by a score 87-71 in the final game of the AUS regular season. Both teams finished out of AUS playoff contention.

StFX leading scorer Kevin Bercy opened the game with 8 points and 7 rebounds, giving the X-Men a 23-17 first quarter advantage.

The Sea-Hawks were led in the first quarter by fifth year post, Caleb Gould, who opened the game with 11 points and 4 rebounds.

After a strong start from StFX, Memorial battled back in the second quarter, once again led by Gould, who scored 9 points in the frame.  The Sea-Hawks went into the halftime break down 41-34 to the visiting X-Men.

StFX came out hungry for a victory to start the third quarter and pushed the lead to 13 points.  The X-Men were fuelled by Bercy, who scored 8 points in the third, and Julius Antonie, who chipped in with 9 points.

The Sea-Hawks were unable to cut into the StFX lead in the fourth quarter with the final score being 87 to 71 for the X-Men.

Kevin Bercy led the way for StFX with 26 points and 16 rebounds.  Julius Antonie was also a key contributor, as he finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds on the day.  Davonte Provo was the setup man for the X-Men, as he dished out 13 assists to go along with 11 points.

Memorial was led by fifth years, Caleb Gould and Noel Moffatt.  Gould had a team-high 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Moffatt scored 12 points and hauled down 4 rebounds in a losing effort.

Both teams finished the regular season on the outside looking in, with Cape Breton securing the final playoff spot last night at home. Also qualifying for the March 4-6 Subway AUS Championship at the Halifax Scotiabank Centre are Dalhousie, UPEI, Acadia, UNB and Saint Mary's.
