Western beat X-Men in semifinal tournament play

Sydney, NS – The StFX X-Men dropped an 83-72 decision to the Western Mustangs Friday evening at Centre 200 in the tournament semi-final at the Cape Breton Fall Classic in pre-season exhibition action.

The Mustangs got out to a 23-19 lead after the first quarter and led throughout the game.

The score was 42-34 at halftime in favor of the OUA squad who defeated the host Cape Breton Capers 71-62 the night before to advance to the semifinal game.

The X-Men advanced by an 86-84 quarterfinal win over Calgary. With the loss to the Mustangs the X-Men will now meet the Nipissing Lakers in the tournament bronze medal game Saturday at 6:00 pm.

Western will take on UPEI Saturday at 8:00 pm in the championship game.

Leading the Mustangs in the win over StFX was Greg Morrow with 23 points and Peter Scholtes with 22. Morrow also pulled in nine rebounds and had six assists while Scholtes had six boards and seven assists.

Alex Coote scored 18 points for Western and Jedson Tavernier netted 13.

The X-Men had four players in double scoring figures including Kevin Bercy with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double night.

Freshman Tristen Ross netted 15 points off the bench for the blue and white while Cameron Walker scored 12 and had six rebounds. Julius Antoine scored 10 points including a trio of three-point baskets.
