Gryphons defeat hoop X-Men

Guelph, ON – The X-Men basketball team wrapped up their three-game exhibition road trip in Ontario with an 87-78 loss to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon at WF Mitchell Centre.

The X-Men got out to a 16-12 lead after the first quarter but it was the Gryphons who held a 42-41 edge at halftime after outscoring the visitors 30-25 in the second quarter.

The teams were deadlocked at 62-62 after three quarters of play before the Gryphons outplayed the X-Men 25-16 in the fourth en route to the victory.

Kevin Bercy (Kanata, ON) continued his strong play for the X-Men and was their top scorer with 16 points.

Julius Antoine (Woodbridge, ON) scored 13 and Davonte Provo (East Preston, NS) netted 12 for the blue and white. Cameron Walker (Dallas, TX) contributed 10 points in the losing effort and Tayo Shittu (Burlington, ON) scored nine.

The X-Men will continue exhibition play next weekend when they host the 37th annual Pizza Delight X-Men Invitational tournament October 16th and 17th at the StFX Oland Centre.

Friday's night's semi-finals feature the Dalhousie Tigers and Saint Mary's Huskies at 6:00 pm, followed by the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics and StFX X-Men at 8:00 pm.

Friday's losers will play in the consolation final Saturday at 6:00 pm while the winners will meet in the tournament championship game Saturday at 8:00 pm.
