X-Men & Capers to meet in final

The StFX X-Men and the Cape Breton Capers will meet in the championship game Saturday night in the 30th installment of the Nike StFX Basketball Invitational tournament.
The X-Men defeated the UPEI Panthers by a significant 112-68 margin in semi-final action Friday night, while the Capers beat the UNB Varsity Reds 79-44. After honoring the recently inducted StFX Sports Hall of Fame 1993 CIAU champion X-Men basketball team in a pre-game ceremony, the current X-Men jumped out to an early 34-19 first quarter lead over the visiting Panthers.
They increased their lead to 55-33 at half-time and didn't look back. Led by Christian 'T-Bear' Upshaw and Tyler Richards with 18 and 17 points each, respectively, the X-Men had six players in double scoring figures. Terrance Taylor and freshman Will Donkoh each scored 13 points while Dwayne Johnson had 12 and Alberto Rodriguez scored 10 points. Johnson also pulled down 7 rebounds while Chad Warren had 9 boards.
Replying for the Panthers were Andrew Black with 16 points and Nick Toews with 14. The win marks the fourth consecutive exhibition match this season where the X-Men have posted more than 100 points on the scoreboard.
In the earlier semi-final game, the Cape Breton Capers outscored the UNB Varsity Reds 15-9 in the first quarter and 16-9 in the second to establish and maintain their lead in the game. Scott Jaspers-Fayer led the Capers in scoring with 16 points while Lasario Burrows and Ryan Roper each scored 13 points a piece. Dustin Anthony and Antwann Parks each scored 8 points for the Varsity Reds.
The Varsity Reds will now meet the Panthers in the consolation final slated for 6:00 pm Saturday night at the StFX Oland Centre while the hometown favorite X-Men will play the Capers at 8:00 pm for the tournament title.
