Dr. David Cudmore receives Brain Injury Canada Special Recognition Award

Antigonish, NS - At the StFX X-Men hockey game on Wednesday evening, long-time Antigonish physician Dr. David Cudmore was honored with the Brain Injury Canada Special Recognition Award, for all his efforts and care he has provided in the community and at StFX University.

The award is granted to an individual, group or organization for their outstanding support, devotion or friendship to advance the cause of brain injury in Canada.

Thirty-three years ago, Dr. David Cudmore moved to Antigonish, in search of new medical experiences. When he arrived, he instantly felt a connection to the small university town, its hospital and the people who live in the area.

A family physician and a devoted sports fan, Dr. Cudmore was recruited to work as the sports physician at StFX in 1988. It was there he discovered a passion for concussion care, and the need for a clinic that served not only the university athletes but also the greater community.

With such a diverse group of patients coming to him with concussion concerns, Dr. Cudmore wanted to put his experience to work in hopes of helping those in need. Combining his passion for sports medicine, and with a strong team of athletic therapists behind him, Dr. Cudmore opened the Antigonish Concussion Clinic in 2007. StFX athletic therapists Tara Sutherland and Ange Wylie work closely with Dr. Cudmore in the concussion clinic.

Making the presentation to Dr. Cudmore was Alexa Zarins, representing Harry Zarins, Executive Director of Brain Injury Canada and Kendra Gottschall, founding member, past co-president of the Antigonish Chapter and past board member of the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia.

Also joining them were Richelle MacLaughlin and Jillian Swinkels, Co-Presidents of the Antigonish Brain Injury Support Group; Director of StFX Athletics and Recreation Leo MacPherson; and Certified Athletic Therapists Tara Sutherland and Ange Wylie.
