CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#9)
McGill, UNB move up to No. 1 in hockey

OTTAWA (CIS) – The McGill Martlets and UNB Varsity Reds are the new teams to beat in CIS women’s and men’s hockey, respectively.

In other CIS sports, the Guelph Gryphons (women’s & men’s cross country), Laval Rouge et Or (women’s soccer), UQAM Citadins (men’s soccer – tied), UBC Thunderbirds (men’s soccer – tied), UBC Okanagan Heat (women’s volleyball) and McMaster Marauders (men’s volleyball) all maintain their pole position.

In women’s hockey, the game of musical chairs continues as McGill becomes the third team in as many coaches’ polls to occupy the No. 1 spot, after Montreal two weeks ago and reigning CIS champion Western last Tuesday. This past weekend, the Martlets (2-0-0) edged nationally third-ranked Montreal 2-1 in a shootout and dominated Ottawa 5-0, while Western (3-2-0) beat Ryerson 3-1 on Saturday but was dropped 3-0 by No. 5 Toronto on Sunday.

In men’s hockey, UNB (4-0-0) and Saskatchewan (6-0-0) both move past defending University Cup champion Alberta (4-1-1), which had topped the first two media polls of the campaign. The V-Reds had a break in their AUS schedule last week and took the opportunity to play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA opponents, defeating Maine 5-1 and battling Harvard to a 3-3 tie. For its part, Alberta split a two-game series against Mount Royal (3-3), losing the opener 4-2 before winning the rematch 2-1 in overtime.

NOTE: The first CIS rankings of the season in basketball will be released next Tuesday (Nov. 3).

Top Five win big, No. 2 Western completes perfect conference schedule

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Calgary Dinos are the top-ranked team in CIS football for the seventh consecutive week and are now one win away from an unblemished regular season.

The Dinos (7-0) received 24 first-place votes and 285 points this week from the Football Reporters of Canada panel. The second-ranked Western Mustangs (8-0 / 261 points) merited four No. 1 nods, while the Laval Rouge et Or (6-1 / 220), who move up one position to No. 3 in the new poll, picked up one.

Following in order in the ninth Top 10 of the campaign are the No. 4 Montreal Carabins (5-2 / 218 points / down one position), No. 5 Guelph Gryphons (7-1 / 153 / up two), No. 6 McMaster Marauders (6-2 / 120 / no change), No. 7 Sherbrooke Vert & Or (4-3 / 108 / down two), No. 8 Manitoba Bisons (5-2 / 101 / no change), No. 9 UBC Thunderbirds (5-2 / 95 / no change) and No. 10 Carleton Ravens (5-3 / 12 / no change).

Top-ranked Calgary, which had already secured first place in the Canada West standings a week ago, continued to roll this past weekend with a 57-7 home win over Regina, marking its sixth victory by 29 points or more in seven outings. The Dinos, who have outscored their opponents by a 407-121 margin so far this season, wrap up league play at Alberta (2-5) on Saturday.

Western and Laval were also impressive last weekend despite facing Top-10 rivals. The Mustangs dominated McMaster 46-24 in Hamilton to complete a perfect regular season and clinch first place in the OUA conference, while the Rouge et Or remained in the driver’s seat in the RSEQ thanks to a 36-7 home win over Sherbrooke.

Montreal dropped back to No. 4 in the new rankings despite a 52-3 drubbing of Bishop’s, while Guelph secured second place in the OUA with a convincing 44-12 win at Carleton.

Other Week 9 results from Top-10 teams included Manitoba 29, Alberta 7 (at Manitoba); UBC 41, Saskatchewan 36 (at Saskatchewan).

The playoffs get under way on Saturday in the OUA with a pair of quarter-final matchups, including No. 10 Carleton visiting Queen’s (5-3) and No. 6 McMaster hosting Laurier (4-4). Kickoff for both games is set for 1 p.m., live on OUA.TV.

In the other conferences, the marquee matchup on the final weekend of league play sees No. 8 Manitoba travel to Vancouver to face No. 9 UBC, with second place in Canada West on the line. Kickoff on Saturday is at 1 p.m. PT, live on Shaw TV, Access and CanadaWest.TV.
