Antigonish, NS—The StFX Department of Athletics honored its 2014-15 CIS Academic All-Canadians Friday morning at their annual celebratory breakfast. This year there were 61 CIS Academic All-Canadians, those student-athletes who have achieved an 80% average or above while consuming a year of eligibility competing for a varsity team.
It was the second highest total StFX Athletics has had since the awarding of Academic All-Canadians began in 1990-91.
“It is important that we pause to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of our student-athletes,” comments StFX Director of Athletics & recreation Leo MacPherson.
“These Academic All-Canadians have mastered the ability to balance a demanding varsity sport commitment, their tremendous community outreach activities, and achieve excellence in their academic endeavors. Their achievements are remarkable.”
Out of the possible 265 eligible student-athletes who consumed CIS eligibility by participating on a varsity team at StFX during the 2014-15 season, 23% achieved CIS Academic All-Canadian status, including 31 male and 30 female student-athletes. StFX University continues to have over 50 CIS Academic All-Canadians each year.
There were 31 first-time Academic All-Canadians, 19 student-athletes who received the honor for the second time in their career, and nine student-athletes who were three-time Academic All-Canadians. Former X-Women hockey forward Alexa Normore received the prestige of being the lone five-time Academic All-Canadian.
Uniquely this year there were four sets of siblings who received the academic honor: Chloe and Elise Brennan (X-Women soccer), Jenna and Lisa Downey (X-Women hockey), Jason and Shannon Hatch (X-Men and X-Women basketball), and Hailey and Hannah Pollock (X-Women track & field).
The Academic All-Canadians were honored at a celebratory breakfast at the Charles V. Keating Centre where they received a certificate from Canadian Interuniversity Sport along with a gift from the Department of Athletics. All student-athletes were encouraged to invite a faculty member to accompany them to the breakfast. The breakfast was held in conjunction with StFX Athletics Faculty Appreciation Week.
