Antigonish, NS—StFX Athletics is pleased to announce this
year’s inductees into the StFX Sports Hall of Fame. Included
in this year’s class are four athletes: Bill McIntyre
(football), Susan (MacEachern) MacDonald (field hockey), Trevor
Reddick (soccer), and Patricia (MacDougall) White (soccer); as well
as one builder, Bernie Chisholm (cross country, track & field)
and three teams: the 1950-51 X-Men hockey team, and the
1999-00 and 2000-01 X-Men basketball teams.
This year’s induction ceremony is scheduled for Thursday,
October 9, 2014 at StFX University. Tickets will be on sale for the
general public in September. Inductees will also take part in a
ceremonial tip-off and puck-drop at the respective X-Men basketball
and X-Men hockey games on October 10th and
11th.
The 2014 StFX Sports Hall of Fame inductees include:
ATHLETE CATEGORY:
Bill McIntyre (Football, Class of
1987)
Wide receiver Bill McIntyre played five seasons with
the X-Men football team from 1983 to 1988. A team captain, Bill was
an outstanding offensive threat who established several conference
scoring records that stood for a decade after he graduated. A
four-time AUAA (now AUS) all-star, he currently sits third overall
in AUS career receiving yards (2362) and fourth overall in AUS
receptions (163). Bill was a member of the 1983 StFX squad that won
the AUAA championship title.
Susan MacDonald (Field Hockey, Class of
1988)
Susan ‘Sue’ MacDonald (nee MacEachern)
was a dominant force on the field hockey pitch for four seasons
with the X-Women from 1984 through to 1988. The Bachelor of
Physical Education student received StFX female athlete of the year
honors in 1988, the same season she was recognized as a CIAU (now
CIS) All-Canadian. Sue was a two-time AUAA all-star who also
competed in the 1985 Canada Games.
Trevor Reddick (Soccer, Class of
1995)
Fullback Trevor Reddick owned the X-Men soccer backfield during
his time as an athlete for four seasons from 1991 to 1995. A
three-time team captain and X-Men most valuable player, Trevor
received numerous AUAA and CIAU accolades in an era that saw the
X-Men win AUAA (now AUS) championships in both 1993 and 1994.
Trevor was an AUAA all-star in all four seasons he competed, and
was recognized as a CIAU first team All-Canadian in 1994, the same
year he garnered CIAU tournament all-star honors. The 1994 StFX
male athlete of the year also competed in varsity wrestling during
his time at StFX and was a top contender in the Atlantic
conference.
Patricia ‘Trish’ White (nee MacDougall) was a leader with the X-Women soccer team for five seasons from 1993 to 1997. After receiving the 1993 AUAA (now AUS) rookie of the year award, the midfielder went on to captain the X-Women for two seasons, racking up individual honors in the process. Trish was a three-time AUAA all-star and was named the 1996 AUAA most valuable player. She twice received CIAU (now CIS) All-Canadian status. The two-time X-Women soccer most valuable player also lent her talents to the X-Women hockey club during her time at StFX.
BUILDER CATEGORY:
Bernie Chisholm (Cross Country, Track & Field,
Class of 1973 & 1974)
The name Bernie Chisholm is synonymous with running
at StFX University. Bernie has been the head coach of the X-Women
and X-Men cross country teams for the past 28 seasons, bringing the
program from club to varsity status. He has also guided the StFX
track and field team for over a decade, building both the X-Women
and X-Men programs into AUS contenders, as evident by the
X-Men’s first ever AUS championship banner this past winter.
Bernie’s cross country teams have won 14 AUS banners over the
years (eight women’s and six men’s titles), and he has
coached eight individual runners to 11 AUS titles, including
two-time Olympian and 2003 CIS individual champion Eric Gillis.
Bernie has coached and developed numerous StFX runners who have
gone on to achieve national and international success.
TEAM CATEGORY:
1950-1951 X-Men Hockey Team
The 1950-51 X-Men hockey produced some of the best
hockey ever seen at StFX. Coached by Father Andy Hogan, the team
was part of an early dynasty that saw the blue and white win nine
Maritime championships in the 1950’s. With a 37-11-2 overall
record in 50 games played in 1950-51, the X-Men won the Maritime
Intercollegiate title, became the first university team to win the
Maritime senior title, and also won the A.P.C. senior hockey
league. The team represented the Maritimes in the Allan Cup for the
Canadian senior championship where they were semifinalists. There
was no national interuniversity championship held in that era. Due
to their success, 1950-51 X-Men hockey squad was in contention to
be selected to represent Canada at the 1952 Olympic Games in
Oslo.
1999-2000 X-Men Basketball Team
The 1999-2000 X-Men basketball team won the second
ever men’s basketball CIAU (now CIS) national championship
for the university. Led by head coach Steve Konchalski, the X-Men
posted a 16-4 record in AUAA (now AUS) regular season play, going
on to defeat Saint Mary’s to win the conference championship.
They followed up with a 3-0 performance on the national stage to
win the W.P. McGee trophy as CIAU champions as they defeated
Brandon 61-60 in the championship game.
2000-2001 X-Men Basketball Team
The 2000-01 X-Men basketball team followed up with a
second consecutive CIAU national championship title with many of
the same players who earned the same feat in 1999-2000. With head
coach Steve Konchalski once again at the helm, this X-Men team
boasted an impressive 20-0 undefeated record in AUAA regular season
play and 33-3 record overall. They defeated Saint Mary’s to
win the AUAA conference championship, following up with a dramatic
83-76 win over Brandon in overtime to claim the CIAU national
banner.
The StFX Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1976 and exists to honor those individuals who have contributed significantly to StFX sports as athletes, teams or as builders. Those chosen inductees have exemplified the spirit and ideals of Xaverian athletics in their professional and community lives. Induction ceremonies take place every two years.
