CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#7)
UBC, Alberta top first volleyball rankings of season

OTTAWA (CIS) – The UBC Thunderbirds and Alberta Golden Bears top the first national rankings of the season in CIS women’s and men’s volleyball, respectively.

In other sports, the only change at the top is in women’s hockey, with the reigning CIS champion Montreal Carabins moving up one spot to leapfrog archrival McGill.

Meanwhile, Guelph (women’s & men’s cross country), Alberta (men’s hockey & women’s rugby), Ottawa (women’s soccer) and UBC (men’s soccer) all maintain their No. 1 status.

In women’s volleyball, UBC was a logical choice to open at No. 1 for the third straight year. Last season, the T-Birds claimed a record-tying sixth consecutive national title and added to their own CIS mark with a 10th banner overall.

UBC received 45 points in the first coaches’ poll of the campaign. Following in order are Trinity Western (42 points), Montreal (36), Manitoba (35), UBC Okanagan (32), Brandon (27), York (26), Winnipeg (21), Dalhousie (18) and Saint Mary’s (16).

On the men’s side, Alberta (10), Trinity Western (3), McMaster (3) and reigning national champion Laval (8) all earned first-place votes but the Bears tallied 200 total points compared to 181 for the Spartans, 175 for the Marauders and 160 for the Rouge et Or, who open in fourth place despite the fact they ended an 18-year domination by Canada West teams last winter when they defeated McMaster in the CIS gold-medal final.

Rounding out the first Top 10 of 2013-14 are Brandon (153 points), UBC (134), UNB (73), Saskatchewan (64), Ryerson (44), as well as Mount Royal (36) and (Western (36), who are tied at No. 10.

The CIS volleyball regular season kicks off this weekend in the OUA and next week in the three other conferences.

FRC – CIS Football Top 10 (#8)
No changes following Thanksgiving weekend

OTTAWA (CIS) – There are no changes this week in the CIS football Top 10. Only three nationally-ranked teams were in action on Thanksgiving weekend, which featured only four games in Ontario and two in the Maritimes.

The Western Mustangs (7-0) top the Football Reporters of Canada poll for the third straight week thanks to 20 first-place votes and 290 points. The reigning Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or (6-0) once again earned the remaining 10 first-place nods and 280 points from the FRC panel to remain comfortably in second position.

Rounding out the eighth national poll of the campaign are the No. 3 Calgary Dinos (6-0 / 234 points), No. 4 Guelph Gryphons (7-0 / 206), No. 5 Queen’s Gaels (6-1 / 186), No. 6 Montreal Carabins (4-2 / 146),  No. 7 Saskatchewan Huskies (4-2 / 110), No. 8 Bishop’s Gaiters (4-2 / 87), No. 9 McMaster Marauders (4-3 / 67) and No. 10 Windsor Lancers (4-3 / 17).

Guelph, Queen’s and McMaster were the only Top-10 squads to take the field last weekend and all registered convincing road wins. The Gryphons defeated newcomer Carleton 48-12, the Gaels crushed Waterloo 78-21, while the Marauders beat Laurier 28-5.

Guelph and Queen’s face off Saturday in Kingston in the feature match-up of Week 9, live on Sportsnet 360 at 1 p.m. ET.

Heading into the final weekend of OUA league play, the undefeated Gryphons are tied with Western atop the conference standings and would secure at least second place with a win. The Gaels can no longer finish first after losing to Western three weeks ago but would leapfrog Guelph with a victory on home turf.

Meanwhile, Western and Laval can clinch first place in the OUA and RSEQ, respectively. The top-ranked Mustangs host York (2-5) Saturday afternoon, while the Vanier Cup champs host Sherbrooke (2-4) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET, live nationally on Radio-Canada.

Should Western and Guelph end up with identical 8-0 records in the OUA, the Mustangs would get the edge thanks to a better point differential. The Mustangs have scored a whopping 408 points in their first seven outings and need 17 more against York to shatter the single-season OUA mark set by McMaster in 2003, a tally which ranks third on the all-time CIS list (Laval, 481, 2003 / Saint Mary’s, 480, 2001).

Western kicker Lirim Hajrullahu could also make CIS history on Saturday. The fifth-year senior needs nine points in his final league game to break the CIS career standard of 410 established by former Ottawa great Neil Lumsden from 1972 to 1975.

In Quebec, in addition to securing top spot in the standings, Laval will be looking to extend a pair of impressive streaks which date back to 2003, the year their next opponent, Sherbrooke, joined the RSEQ. The Rouge et Or have won a CIS-record 61 consecutive games at home overall and are 17-0 all-time against the Vert & Or, including a 20-0 shutout on the road earlier this season.

Other games involving Top-10 teams this weekend include Regina (2-4) at No. 3 Calgary; No. 6 Montreal at McGill (3-3); Manitoba (3-3) at No. 7 Saskatchewan; No. 8 Bishop’s at Concordia (0-6); No. 9 McMaster at Carleton (0-7); No. 10 Windsor at Ottawa (4-3).

Saskatchewan can clinch second place in Canada West, while McMaster and Windsor are hoping to finish fourth in Ontario and earn home-field advantage for the first round of the OUA playoffs.

NOTES: The AUS game of the week on Eastlink TV is StFX (3-3) at Acadia (2-4) Saturday at 2 p.m. AT... The Canada West game of the week on SHAW TV is Alberta (0-6) at UBC (3-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.

CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#2)
Alberta still No. 1, top 5 remains unchanged

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey national rankings for the second time in as many polls this season.

For the second straight week, Alberta and reigning University Cup champion UNB split first-place votes from the 17-member media panel but this time the Bears held a convincing 13-4 advantage, compared to a 9-8 edge last Tuesday. The defending Canada West champs received 166 total points, while the Varsity Reds earned 157 to remain comfortably in second position.

Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 3 Western Mustangs (116 points / no change), No. 4 Calgary Dinos (112 / no change), No. 5 Waterloo Warriors (83 / no change), No. 6 UPEI Panthers (66 / up one position), No. 7 Saskatchewan Huskies (51 / down one), No. 8 Carleton Ravens (35 / up one), No. 9 York Lions (33 / previously unranked) and No. 10 Saint Mary’s Huskies (33 / down two).

In Canada West action this past weekend, Alberta and Calgary both improved to 4-0 on the season, while Saskatchewan shows a 2-2 mark after splitting its second straight two-game series.

The Bears swept Mount Royal 6-2 and 6-1 and have outscored their opponents 21-3 in four league outings. The Dinos beat UBC 3-1 and 9-5, while the Huskies lost 4-1 to Manitoba before winning the rematch 5-0.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are now getting ready for a doubleheader in Saskatoon this Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile in the OUA, third-ranked Western and No. 5 Waterloo both got off to a 2-0 start in league play, No. 8 Carleton opened with a two-game split, and No. 9 York improved to a perfect 3-0.

The Mustangs edged Concordia 3-2 in overtime and outscored UQTR 5-3. The Warriors came out on top of a pair of 3-2 decisions, in regulation against UOIT and in extra time versus Queen’s. The Ravens crushed Windsor 8-1 in their opener but dropped the rematch 5-2. The Lions dominated newcomer Laurentian 6-1 and doubled Nipissing 4-2.

In the AUS, conference play finally starts this weekend, including UNB opening the defence of its fourth University Cup title in seven years on home ice against StFX (Friday) and No. 10 Saint Mary’s (Saturday).

NOTE: The last time York was ranked in the Top 10 was during the 2005-06 season. That year, the Lions (then Yeomen) were ranked 10th on November 1 (poll #3) and November 8 (poll #4).
